I'm trying to make it a point to try a new trail each time I visit Mount Rainier National Park. During this particular day, I hiked the Pinnacle Peak Trail, which is right across the road from Reflection Lakes parking lot, along the Stevens Canyon Road.

I chose the perfect day for a hike, because the day after that was a little hazy - probably from wildfire smoke drifting in to the area.

My main reason for hiking this trail was to not only capture images of "The Mountain," but to also photograph the Paradise area from this particular vantage point. You can see the parking lot and buildings in this image, although they are teeny tiny in the far distance, just above the tree line.

This trail is excellent exercise, since it's 1.3 miles straight up, and then the same straight down. It was, however, for me - short legs lugging a hefty camera pack and tripod - one of those trails where I really had to watch my footing. And don't ever let people tell you going up is harder than going back down. For me, it's just the opposite.

Nonetheless, it's a great (and popular) hike, although I managed to start out early enough that I barely saw anybody else on the trail.

The female has just caught and killed a water monitor lizard while the smaller sized male looks on with admiration and delight. This lizard would serve as a hefty meal for the whole family of 4.

A water monitor lizard fall prey to the Crested Goshawk.

A tough guy like this lizard won't go down without a fight. But it has little chance of escaping when spotted by a hungry hawk. I'm lucky to witness this hunt and certainly to my surprise that the hawk would take on a monitor lizard. A young individual though, it's armed with a powerful jaw and a set of nasty teeth, a formidable tail and claws that could do serious harm to its pursuer.

The hawk manages to do the job like a walk in the park.

The lizard not only provide a hefty meal for herself but also to the 2 juveniles she has been raising.

full story and the range of prey items.

This was really not meant to be a series, but in reality numbers seem to be way way down again at Elk Island National Park this year, and subjects seem to be at a great distance surrounded by water as opposed to reeds and grasses near shore, so once again the water plays an important part of the image. This Mallard hen was actually following a drake, whose disappearing wake can be seen behind her. I don't often think of rules of thirds or anything like that, but here placing the wakes approximately on the thirds works well I think. Being a hefty crop I was left with a number of possible choices with how to crop during processing.

With heavy smoke still blanketing the area I will not be going out today so pickin's are slim from my recent trip to the National park, but I should have a couple of images for the next couple of days.

Three nights on and Comet C/2024 G3 (Atlas) appears to have disintegrated a bit, as the nucleus is less intensely bright. The upside is that the tail is longer.

In this view from Sinclair Head, Wellington, G3 is setting towards Mount Tapuae-o-Uenuku in the Inland Kaikōura Range, one of northern South Island's iconic mountains.

There was not a lot of light by this time and some short trails are noticeable due to the long exposure and long focal length.

Differences between the Yellowlegs can be subtle

Here are some things to keep in mid

Killdeer as Size Reference GRYE has body size obviously Bigger than Killdeer --- this one is quite a reliable differentiator

GRYE is overall heavier in structure -- longer heavier bill (and as guide books often note-- typically has a discernable upturn)

In this case , we have a Juvenile/Immature and the upturn only slightly pronounced or developed.

The hefty thickness of bill at the base of the bill can be,with practice, an indicator of GRYE

The relative "big boned -ness" of legs can be,with practice, an indicator of GRYE as well

A few hefty showers around this evening

Lake States number 12 is westbound out of Trout Lake with a fairly hefty train. GP30's 715 and 708 are notched up as they battle the grade near MP447 on August 17, 1987. Late evening clouds are rolling in and I barely got the shot off in sunlight. By the time 15 cars had went by me I was in cloud shadows. We had a pretty hefty rain shower about a hour earlier and it just made everything seem so vibrant that evening. Consists like this made the SOO Lake States era spectacular.

Clearing skies after a hefty shower. I tried to capture the Gulls on their evening commute out to sea, but their trail across the sky is rather faint.

The Osky job is heading south with a hefty train. The crew left a bunch of cars behind at Marshalltown because the customer didn't want them. The crew passes the elevator at Pickering, which doesn't look like it does much anymore. This job rocks and rolls on a track that is anything but good. This job runs to the Cargill plant at Eddyville and back each afternoon/evening.

One of my few photos from Vourvourou in Greece - we were there to relax, not so much for photography...

But the morning on the day of our departure brought us an amazing sunrise - the weather was really clear after the hefty thunderstorm the night before.

The mountains under the orange strip, are on the Athos peninsula, about 25km away from Sithonia, where this was taken. All the days before we had 40°C and the visibility was very bad.

Technique/Processing

Two shots in landscape format, both handheld at 1/15s @ ISO 1600, stitched together in Photoshop. After the stitching i added a layer with a grey (70% opacity) gradient in soft light blending mode to make the clouds darker.

Finally i applied a bit of Darken/Lighten Center from Color Efex, to accentuate the pier more.

Chalkidiki, also Halkidiki or Chalcidice, less often Khalkidiki and rarely the inconsistent Chalkidice (Greek: Χαλκιδική), is one of the prefectures of Greece. It is located in the southeastern portion of Central Macedonia. The Cholomontas mountains lie in the northcentral part. It consists of a large peninsula in the northwestern Aegean Sea, resembling a hand with three "fingers" (though in Greek these peninsulas are often referred to as "legs") – Pallene (now Kassandra), Sithonia, and Agion Oros (the ancient Acte), which contains Mount Athos and its monasteries.

The first Greek settlers in this area came from Chalcis (Halkis) and Eretria, cities in Euboea, around the eighth century BC who founded cities such as Mende, Toroni and Scioni; a second wave came from Andros in the sixth century BC. The ancient city of Stageira was the birthplace of the great philosopher Aristotle.

The capital of Chalkidiki is the main town of Polygyros, located in the center of the peninsula. Its most populous municipalities are Moudania, Kallikrateia, Polygyros, and Kassandra. Its largest towns are Nea Moudania,(Νέα Μουδανιά) Nea Kallikrateia, (Νέα Καλλικράτεια) and the main town of Polygyros.

There are many summer resorts on the beaches of all three fingers where other minor towns and villages are located, such as at Yerakini (Gerakina Beach), Neos Marmaras (Porto Carras) Ouranoupolis, Nikiti, Psakoudia, Kallithea (Pallene/Pallini, Athos), Sani Resort and more.

In June 2003, at the holiday resort Porto Carras located in Neos Marmaras, Sithonia, European Union leaders presented the first draft of the European constitution. See History of the European Constitution for developments after this point.

Believed to be the cosmic fire of creation by the Maya of Mesoamerica, M42 blazes brightly in the constellation Orion. Popularly called the Orion Nebula, this stellar nursery has been known to many different cultures throughout human history. The nebula is only 1,500 light-years away, making it the closest large star-forming region to Earth making it relatively bright. Because of its brightness and prominent location just below Orion’s belt, M42 can be spotted with the naked eye, while offering an excellent peek at stellar birth for those with telescopes. It is best observed during January. The Mayan culture’s likening of the Orion Nebula to a cosmic fire of creation is very apt. The nebula is an enormous cloud of dust and gas where vast numbers of new stars are being forged. Its bright, central region is the home of four massive, young stars that shape the nebula. The four hefty stars are called the Trapezium because they are arranged in a trapezoidal pattern. Ultraviolet light unleashed by these stars is carving a cavity in the nebula and disrupting the growth of hundreds of smaller stars.

An icon along the Aurora Sub at Genoa is this Tobacco Pool Building. Many great shots have been published over the years from this location. I'm fascinated by the impressive viaduct at Whalley, which is just a few miles from my home, and it's recently become a bit of a personal project to see how many different aspects that I can photograph, whilst still trying bring a fresh outlook to it.

After a hefty spell of rain, the conditions on the afternoon of 25th February were much more favourable. This puddle just happened to be handy to allow me to catch something of the reflection of Colas Rail 70812 gliding by with the 09:20 Mountsorrel to Carlisle ballast train.

The two spans on either side of the roadway are infilled to assist in dampening some of the vibrations from trains passing over the viaduct. In a clever piece of design by the engineer, Terence Wolfe Flanagan, the infills were decorated in the style of gothic arches, complete with cornices, in deference to the nearby gatehouse of Whalley Abbey, which can just be glimpsed through the archway here.

Have you ever made an 80/20 analysis of your life?

It's funny how we take Pareto for granted in business. Or well, at least I do, since I came across it more than a decade ago. There is more to it than just business. Try to apply it in everyday life. What 20% of your moments are responsible for 80% of your happiness?

Do more of that.

I discovered that for me, having this view has an incredible impact on my well-being. If I stay and work in a flat with this view, I become more productive AND more rested after work. Of the 20% of the places that I have worked from, I have gained 80% of positive memories from them. This is something that you can enjoy from a Berlin flat – as long as you have the hefty funds to do so.

So here we are in Lisbon…

Have you made any eye-opening observations using Pareto yourself?

Large tanager with a hefty bill. Adult males are completely red; immature males are dull yellow-olive with blotchy patches of red. Females are variable in colour, ranging from pale dull yellow to brighter orange. Can be confused with female Scarlet Tanager; Summer has a longer, paler bill and less contrast between wing and body colour. Also compare with dustier-looking, stouter-billed Hepatic Tanager. Breeds in mature forests, favouring mixed deciduous and pine in the southeastern U.S. and riparian corridors in the western U.S. and northern Mexico. Extensive winter range from Mexico to Bolivia, where it can be found in any wooded area. Often gives a short, descending rattle “pit-a-tuck.”

My first, and I found it right on my own doorstep. The poor thing was not into the whole photoshoot idea, and either ran or cowered, not making a great subject.
