I wonder if the sign really looked like this.

The bowling alley is gone. Closed in 2009.

Hey they got free coffee and a neato sign. Can you ask for anything more? Las Vegas 2005.

I can't believe I've gone 10 months without photographing this build! I displayed this at Brickvention 2020 which seems like an absolute world away now with everything transpiring since.

It utilises some of those non-production Scala plates which was the impetus for buying them in the first place.

The sign is based on the Linbrook Bowling alley in Anaheim, California, a beautiful remnant of the era when Googie style ruled the roadside.

So glad they decided to repurpose the Googie-style building and sign of the former Friendly Hills Lanes

Cruise night at Johnie's (now Big Boy) Broiler, a Googie coffee shop and drive-in restaurant in Downey. Built in 1958, demolished 2007, rebuilt 2009. 7447 Firestone Boulevard, Downey California.

From BobsBigBoyBroiler.com:

Downey's former Harvey's/Johnie's Broiler has made a major comeback from an utterly illegal Sunday afternoon demolition in 2007. Now a Bob's Big Boy, the restaurant has won the LA Conservancy's President's Award for preservation.

The El Camino in Socorro, New Mexico is a great diner with good food, including excellent New Mexico food. The fellows behind the window are working hard and fast, and the food that comes out is great.

But the fun part is that this cafe was designed in the "Googie" era and still shows many characteristics. For instance, the sign outside is pure Googie, as is the stainless steel used here for the kitchen window arrangement.

From wikipedia: Norms Restaurants is a chain of diner-style restaurants in Southern California. The chain was founded in 1949 and its restaurants are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They advertise their hours with the line "We never close." There are currently 17 locations in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

The first Norms opened on La Cienega Boulevard in 1957 featuring a distinctive angular and brightly colored style that came to be known as Googie architecture.[1] Key characteristics include concrete walls, large glass windows, jutting roof, and a neon marquee.[1] The first Norms restaurant was designed by the firm of Armet & Davis.

Off of First St. in the Boyle Heights area of one can look up and see the ever changing "googie styled neon sign. Then look slightly further west and see the expanding illuminated skyline of down town Los Angeles. All that and directly next to LA's Mariachi Square, what a truly LA place to grab a burger and chili fries!

the sands has the classy hotel sign - however, after a visit last week, it seems like the owners are in the process of removing all the neon and painting the whole thing maroon

Lovely intact motel sign. I love all the "add ons" like "Budget" and "Color TV," representing the changes along the way....

Never pass up a chance to take a picture of some Googie architecture!

Took this on my phone more for mapping and just because it's so irresistible. More of this one to come.

Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. This is my second favorite struture in Tomorrowland, behind Rocketower Plaza. It features a googie architecture style known as Vroom, where movement is expressed in the architecture through foward thrusing pointed building parts. The waterfall exhibits further movement and the pond helps to seperate this area from Cinderella Castle (which is to the left). Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe used to be known as the Tomorrowland Terrace, prior to 1994.

EXPORE #379 for July 15, 2009. Thank you for the views and comments. It is very much appreciated!

If you are a fan of architecture that was influenced by car culture, the space age and the atomic age then you are probably familiar with the term Googie. Googie architecture originated in Southern California and was popular among motels, gas stations and restaurants. Features of Googie include upswept roofs, curvilinear, geometric shapes, and bold use of glass, steel and neon. This poster celebrates Googie style. Grab a milk shake and burger and dive into all the fun futuristic details of the Comet Cafe!

3377 Wilshire Blvd. on the corner of Alexandria. Probably the most famous of the Brown Derby Restaurants due to its mimetic architecture. The Hollywood Brown Derby was probably more popular with the movie stars of the day.
