Evening shot of the Seattle's Fremont Bridge, mere seconds before it went up on a warm July night. Aurora Bridge looms in the background. The Photo Composition gurus may be shaking their heads right now, but can rest assured that no composition was attempted. It was a quick shot from a tripod, because I knew the bridge would be going up soon. What I tried to capture were the colors, which are contrasted heavily at this spot.

Taken with a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm lens and Fuji 400 film. Roughly 4-6 second exposure. Scanned from the negative at 2400 dpi and straightened/cleaned up in Picasa.

The Force is strong in my whiskey and liqueur 😁

"In August my internship really started to pick up steam, getting busier and busier. Originally my internship was only eleven weeks long, but I was fortunate enough to get an extension of six more weeks. This was a good opportunity to continue working on cases that I was involved in but hadn’t finished as well as have employment longer as I looked for placement through my DHA.

Throughout the month I continued working on the eight case files that I am the project lead for. Each case is going to meet NEPA conformance through a Categorical Exclusion (CX). Six of the projects are renewals of existing ROWs, one is an amendment to a ROW grant, and another is a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) needed to clear vegetation in order to conduct maintenance on a ROW.

For each case file I had to draft a document known as a Compliance Record for a Categorical Exclusion. This document is written by whoever is the project lead for a proposed action that is being categorically excluded through NEPA. The purpose of this form is to address twelve specific issues that any given project may be involved in. A couple of the issues that it addresses is weather the proposed action will impact public health or safety, weather T&E species or their critical habitat will be impacted, or whether the proposed action will have an impact on any cultural sites. For each of the twelve potential issues you have to determine if the proposed action will or won’t have that specific impact and then you must give reasoning for your decision. Once this document has been drafted you present it to the assigned interdisciplinary team (IDT) and they help make corrections that need to be made to the language in the rationale you chose to use for each issue. Some issues are T&E specific some address cultural issues and some are broad general issues. Depending on what the issue pertains to, that specific specialist on the IDT has to sign off on your declaration. The cases I’m working on are in this stage, and meetings are set up in the coming weeks to get these documents finalized.

On August 11th I traveled to the Audubon Research Ranch located south of the town of Elgin, AZ with one of my mentors, Linda Dunlavey, a natural resource specialist, and our GIS specialist who is in training to become a Realty Specialist. We met with the manager of the ranch and several representatives from Tucson Electric Power (TEP). The reason we were having a meeting and subsequent field visit was because TEP had to conduct emergency maintenance on a power line that was a ROW issued by the BLM and was located on part of the ranch. When TEP conducted their emergency repairs they neglected to tell either the BLM or anyone at the research ranch that they were going to be out there. While they carried in poles and other heavy equipment for the repairs they trampled a 20 year old research plot, broke a gate, and damaged a windmill all on their way to the ROW. Once they got to the ROW (which was issued as a 40 foot wide easement) they trampled plants and created staging areas that were not allowed by the grant and that exceeded the width of the ROW. The major problem with all of this was that TEP didn’t notify either party they needed to and if they would have they could have avoided a lot of the damage that they did. Specifically when it came to the impacts around the actual ROW, the BLM could have had a resources specialist on site while they did their maintenance to make sure that they were within their rights and making sure they didn’t create unnecessary damage. Even in a last minute emergency repair situation they could have been a little more careful and respectful of where they were and what they were doing. The main point that came away from the meeting and field visit was that they should have communicated better and they would have been able to avoid a large headache and subsequent restoration plan they are now responsible to draft and conduct to help remedy the situation they created. For me this was a good opportunity to see how to handle a potentially contentious situation with other outside entities. This whole situation really came down to lack of communication on TEPs part.

During the month of August I also had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting and field visit with a team of BLM employees, local ranchers, and the Nature Conservancy as they prepare for a prescribed burn. There was a meeting that was a forum to discuss issues that may arise and how to mitigate those issues. For example erosion was a concern because the burn is going to happen in a mountainous setting that is also used for cattle grazing. The team wanted to make sure that erosion would not be so bad that it would impact the watering holes that the cattle use. This along with this several other issues were discussed and the field visit to the site of the Rx burn helped the specialist discuss and decide the best management strategies.

Lastly I got to help one of our range specialist conduct some field research on Agave in a grassland setting. In addition I helped another intern who works on the Ironwood Forest National Monument with some maintenance to barriers in washes to limit recreationists and illegal drug smugglers to use the system of washes as roads to move product."

Mule deer at Lake of the Woods in the Cathedral Lake Provincial Park British Columbia Canada

Named for the longhorn cattle that once roamed wild, the 52,000-acre Cow Mountain Recreation Area offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The terrain is rugged, consisting mostly of steep, chaparral-covered slopes with scattered stands of fir, pine and oak. Elevations range from 800 to 4,000 feet. The area offers beautiful views of Ukiah and Clear Lake, over 31 miles of stream, 13 wildlife reservoirs, and habitat for blacktail deer, bear, wild turkey, and other upland species.

The Recreation Area is divided into three management sections to provide quality recreational opportunities for a wide variety of users: North Cow Mountain Recreation Area, South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area and the Sheldon Creek Recreation Site.

"The ACE internship has been incredible! As a Natural Resource Specialist (NRS) I created an Abandoned (ABD) Well and Final Abandonment Notice (FAN) tracking system for the Oklahoma Field Office, but also traveled throughout Oklahoma inspecting abandoned well sites. This country is beautiful! The biodiversity does not disappoint, and I’ve found myself in a different eco-region every other week or so. After the inspections, I recorded the results in the Automated Fluid Mineral Support System (AFMSS) and proceeded with the appropriate paperwork to advance ABD wells to the next step. I enjoyed learned the “cradle to grave” process of an ABD well, and have found it to be practical knowledge for working in Oklahoma’s oil industry.

This internship opens many doors to its participants. Although I worked with abandoned wells, others are tasked with a variety of jobs. Besides working on my own project, I shadowed a Natural Resource Specialist, NEPA specialist, a Land Law Examiner, an Archaeologist, and a Planning & Environmental Specialist. I think this was really beneficial for me to understand the big picture of what the Tulsa office does and how the BLM system works here. Lastly, I got the opportunity to go on a Wild Horse and Burro tour (see photos below)!

I feel I’ve become a well-rounded NRS. Thank you, ACE!"

Thanks to reintroduction effort that began at the Vermilion Cliffs in 1996, condors can be found soaring the skies of Arizona once again. Visitors are almost guaranteed to see condors soaring above the beautiful landscape at any time of year from the condor viewing kiosk at the west end of the monument. Viewing is best at mid-to late morning. We suggest you bring binoculars to get the best view possible.
