The memorial to Sarah Good is one of 20 benches that have been placed next to the old graveyard in Salem.

Salem village was where Danvers is today, and is where most of the trials were held. There is a separate memorial across the road from where the old meeting house was where many of the examinations took place.

Salem was the port

The Witch House (also called the Jonathan Corwin House), was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin and is the only structure still standing in Salem, Massachusetts with direct ties to the Salem witch trials of 1692. The house was bought by Judge Corwin in 1675, when he was 24 years old, and he lived there for more than forty years. Corwin is buried in the nearby Broad Street Cemetery. The house remained in the Corwin family until the mid-19th century. The Witch House is located at 310 Essex Street, at the cross streets of North & Summer in the Chestnut Street District of Salem.

As a local magistrate and civic leader, Corwin was called upon to investigate the claims of diabolical activity when a surge of witchcraft accusations arose in Salem and neighboring communities. He took the place of Judge Nathaniel Saltonstall, who resigned after the execution of Bridget Bishop. Corwin served on the Court of Oyer and Terminer, which ultimately sent nineteen to the gallows. All nineteen refused to admit to witchcraft and maintained their innocence.

View of the Salem Witch Memorial, In 1692, 14 women and 6 men were accused of being witches, were tried, convicted, and executed.Executions took place on June 10, July 19, August 19, September 19 and September 22, 1692. To this day,the events of 1692 are used as a yardstick to measure the depth of civility and due process in our society. Salem Village (present-day Danvers, Massachusetts) was known for its many internal disputes, and for disputes between the village and Salem Town (present-day Salem). Arguments about property lines, grazing rights, and church privileges were rife, and neighbors considered the population as "quarrelsome."

This wreath and doll was one of many left at the memorial this week.

The memorial is for those persecuted in the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1692.

The text on the doll reads:

Hatred and prejudice now banished

Let love reside

Across the veil of time our ancestors call

We are still wise ones through it all

Elizabeth was one of the victims of the Salem Witch hysteria in 1692. She was accused and examined on May 31 by John Hawthorne and two other judges, tried and condemned a month later and hanged with four other women on July 19 of that year.

She said "If it was the last moment I was to live, God knows I am innocent of anything of this nature" in response to the accusations against her.

Her trial and accusation is an interesting example of how far afield the rumors went. She lived in Topsfield and was accused by a family who lived in Ipswich. These towns are a fair distance from one another - back in those days probably half a day's ride on horseback (although Topsfield is a lot closer to where Salem village was than Ipswich is.).

October 1st 2016

In memory of those innocents who died during the Salem Village witchcraft hysteria of 1692.

Not many people know that the Salem trial and persecution happened not in the port of Salem, but in Salem Village (now Danvers) about 15min drive from Salem.

This memorial is across the street from where the Hall was and is the site where the Hall's remnants were left after it was dismantled in 1702. This memorial was built in 1992. On either side of the "Book of Life" are a pair of shackles.

October 1st 2016

Sarah was one of the three first accused as witches in the Salem Witch hysteria of 1692. She and her husband had been forced to sell their property and were destitute. She was reduced to begging and grew angry with people who were not charitable to her.

A interesting account in Famous American Trails describes how when she was about to be hanged, a minister tried to extract a confession. The article (by Douglas Linder) describes her response "You are a liar. I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink." Her curse seems to have come true. Noyes died of internal hemorrhage, bleeding profusely at the mouth. Despite the seemingly effectiveness of her curse, it likely just further convinced the crowds of her guilt.

October 1 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Salem Zombiewalk has been an annual event for a number of years. This is a great family-friendly event of a genre that incorporates all aspects of life, or rather, undead that takes place in Halloweentown, USA during Halloween Season. Prior to the Zombiewalk, participants gather at Collins Cove park for some field day activities, last minute costume tweaks and alterations, and of course to admire other lovers of the Zombie theme. Pets are welcome, so long as they are crowd friendly and well-behaved. Details are on the official flyer, please look for it on Facebook, and share the event. More info available via darqsalem

3:30 pm: Zombie Kickball begins, 4:30 pm: walk begins.
