Might as well make it a trilogy. After finishing up the DMVW chase to Britton, we raced back north to see if we could catch up to the RRVW again. We found them just finishing up their work at Bobcat in Gwinner and then continued the chase west from there to Oakes. If you've ever been in the area, you may have noticed signs proclaiming "Crossing the Continental Divide". Uhhhh, I thought the Rocky Mountains would be a little more rockier than this? Well, this divide isn't between the Gulf and the Pacific, but rather the Gulf and the Hudson Bay. A good portion of North Dakota drains northward, primarily through the Red River. The divide is...subtle...like many of the features in the Midwest. But it does exist. In this shot, the RRVW may damn well be cresting the Continental Divide here, dropping into the James River valley for the final few miles into Oakes.
It's been over four years now since I took my second big swing in the Dakotas. This trip left me a little bitter. And even today with hindsight, these photos don't leave me with a warm nostalgic feeling. After the first two days I suffered the rest of the trip with a cold. Then, two days were eaten up by poor weather. We put on a lot of useless unproductive miles those two days, creating a giant circumscribed square within the combined "Dakota". The skies were also slightly tinged with smoke from the absolutely massive and long lasting Dixie fire in California (as well as others). We saw some really cool stuff. But it's been hard to forget the negatives and muster up the enthusiasm to post any of these. Anyway, enough whining...
RRVW's Oakes job is at Milnor dropping off a cut of company hoppers with a nice pair of CATs. This is the former NP 5th Subdivision of their Saint Paul Division that split off their mainline west of Staples near Wadena, passing through Fergus Falls, Breckenridge-Wahpeton, and ending in Oakes. NP was a dominate player in southeastern North Dakota. Although SOO and GN made their own forays into this region, paralleling the NP to the south by 10 to 15 miles. BN continued operations on a rationalized system that was cut back to Breckenridge-Wahpeton, where the GN main from Wilmar to Moorhead crossed. Following the wave of Class-I spinoffs in the post-Staggers era, this line and a cluster of other former NP and GN lines were spun off in 1987, forming the Red River Valley and Western (RRVW) railroad. The RRVW has maintained a quite active base of agricultural customers on their remaining lines, with many shuttle loaders built on their system within the last 5 years or so. Large processing plants also keep them busy moving "shorts", as shown here, using their now ancient fleet of late-60s and early-70s era covered hoppers.
While following this job west, we noted chatter of the other "Valley & Western" regional working in Hankinson. About this time, we heard them give totals on their line about 10 miles to the south of us and decided to check it out. More on that in the next post...
Polaroid 600 instant photo taken circa 1990. My sister shows her new Mustang with the 5.0L (302) HO V8. It had a manual transmission, whether it was a 4- or 5-speed I don't recall. It was one of the many other cars she has owned equipped with a stick-shift including an Opel Manta, Firebird Trans Am and Porsche Boxter.
The only one I saw on this trip but happened to be on the day that a contact Alpus announced he had bravely added one of these to his growing fleet. So, this one's for you Alex ;-)
I like the wheels on these but I magine they quicky went went from 'showroom' pristine to 'oh sod it' dusty and stayed like that for many but the most fastidious of owners...

Here's my car, parked, while I wander downtown Tampa taking shots of RNC prep. There's quite a few Police milling about -- with new Chargers.
Again, closer view of the 3rd generation, left to right Assamite, Tzimice, and Tubal (who is my own creation, the whole point of the Tryptic [aside from the fact that it's discovery by mortals and plans to put it in a museum] his glyph showing him to be the sole child of the Crone).

G1 Cool Breeze, G3 Sunset Sweety, Carrie Clawz (custom), Starsong and G4 Pinkie Pie at the Popcorn Theatre :).
Btw, the set only came with two snap-on cups originally, but at one point I had *three* Popcorn Theatres (...long story XD), thus why I have four :P Oh, and as you can see from this pic, Ponyville accessories fit the mini G4s just fine :) In fact, I'd say they fit G4s BETTER; it took me like 5 mins to get the cups on the others' feet but it just snapped right onto Pinkie's leg, haha.
Oh, and that's Rainbow Dash's Rainbow House in the background, btw.

....lol, okay, so.. I was rearranging my MLPs a few months ago, and since Desert Rose is my favourite G3, I didn't want to put her on the floor, so I just put her down on the first thing I saw.. the Sylvanian Grand Hotel. XD And then this happened.
Btw, I have two School Play sets because I got the JP ver first, not realizing that Flair were going to release it themselves with the Cheshire cat brother, who was previously unreleased.. :P Lol, I like that set, so it's all good.
