History
The Lunenburg Academy was designed by H.H. Mott, a well known New Brunswick architect, in 1893. The building was completed in 1895, and opened for class on November 7, 1895. It was constructed as part of Nova Scotia’s shift from one room school houses to public Academies.
The Lunenburg Academy was registered as both a Provincial Heritage Property and a National Historic Site in 1983. The building is now the only intact 19th century Academy building surviving in Nova Scotia. It operated continuously as an educational building from 1895 until March of 2012.
Design & Construction
The Lunenburg Academy is a three story wooden Victorian building, in the Second Empire style. The imposing scale of the Academy is enhanced by its location on the top of Gallows Hill and the open space that surrounds the building. The long standing colour scheme, of white and black, with a red foundation, window sashes, doors and roof, remains intact. This colour scheme highlights the high level of detail and decorative variety found on the exterior of the building and has become a character defining element of the building. According to the Architect's report, Historic photos imply the original colour was not white and an early photograph tends to confirm this.
The long elevations of the east and west facades both feature a central projection that is flanked by two towers which, in contrast to the large mansard roof and horizontal decorative elements, provide the building with a vertical emphasis. Each of these towers contain a staircase, which together with the additional two stairs leading to the doors on the north and south elevations, are of particular importance to the historic use of the building. The six individual entrances to the building and their adjoining staircases, along with interior dividers in the hallways, allowed the building to be used by both genders, yet maintain their complete separation, until the children entered the classrooms.
The interior of the building is flooded with daylight by means of the large wood windows that dominate the facades. The majority of the windows are three part windows with a fixed transom over a double hung sash, with the notable exception of a separate semi circular and two oval windows found on both the north and south facades. The Serlian and single dormer windows, topped by intricate brackets or pediments, both continue the rhythm of the lower windows and the ornamental quality of the building up to the level of the roof.
Standing on top of "Gallows Hill," the Academy, like a great Victorian Matriarch, surveys her family of distinctive and beautiful homes in the old Town. Visible for miles around, it is an outstanding landmark and one of the most remarkable heritage buildings in the Province.

The Dorset Martyrs Memorial is a grade II listed sculpture by Elisabeth Frink in Dorchester, Dorset, England. It was unveiled in 1986 on the site of the gallows where Catholic martyrs were hanged in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The memorial takes the form of two martyrs facing an executioner figure placed in triangular formation, looking inward. Each of the figures stands on a flat rectangular base This arrangement commemorates the Dorset men and women who suffered for their faith and, in particular, seven known Catholics who were executed where the memorial stands today.
In memory of all Catholics in Dorset who suffered and died for their faith. This is Gallows Hill, Dorchester's execution site in the 16th and 17th centuries, until it was moved to Maumbury Rings around 1703. Condemned people were brought here from the prison below Icen Way (then known as Gaol Lane).
Hundreds of people died here among them the Chideock Martyrs, who died defending there Catholic faith. During the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) Catholics were forced to worship in secret for fear of prosecution. The stronghold of Catholicism in Dorset was at Chideock in the castle belonging to the Arundell family.
In 1591 the family's chaplain was Jabo Cornelius. Born in Bodmin he was taken into the Arundell household and educated, along with his servants Patrick Salmon and John Carry. When Thomas Bosgrave, a relation of the Arundells, offered the bare-headed Cornelius his own hat, he too was arrested.
Cornelius was taken to London. Under torture, he refused to name any of his converts. He was returned to Dorchester where all four men were tried, found guilty and condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
On 4 July 1594 they were executed in this place. All four men made declarations of faith before their deaths. The last martyr hanged here was Father Hugh Green.
Despite such martyrdoms, worship continued in Chideock. After the castle was destroyed in 1645 during the Civil War, Catholics met in a nearby barn, later converted into a chapel which is now the church of Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs and St Ignatius. All that now remains of the castle is a moated mound on a hill outside the village, crowned by a Cross.

View over Stigberget in Stockholm with the Navigation school at the right. The oldest name of Stigberget is Gallows Hill. During the 1500s and 1600s it was one of Stockholm's execution sites. On the oldest realistic painting of Stockholm which is preserved from 1535, towering the gallows at the top of Stigberget. It stood on the mountain's highest point. There its deterrent silhouette was visible all over town. In many charts from the 1500s and 1600s was the gallows plotted as a seamark.
The Navigation School in Stockholm was built in 1907 on Stigbergets highest point, probably where the gallows once stood. At the top of the school tower is a signal mast with a so-called time ball. It is a mechanical device which indicates the right time for the ships in the harbor. The ball is a ball-shaped basket made of steel strip which is hoisted on top and falls after five minutes down at exactly 12:00 GMT and chronometer on board could be corrected after that time. The time ball is still in use.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada,
The Lunenburg Academy, built between 1893 en 1895, is an example of late 19th century Victorian architecture. It is a National Historic Site and still functions as a public school for the primary level, grades one to five. Each floor has six entrances, six classrooms and six staircases connecting up to the next level.
It is located at the top of Gallows Hill in Lunenburg.
Sited on a peninsula between two harbours, Lunenburg (pop. 2.800) is the prettiest and most colorful town in Nova Scotia. It features one of the best preserved examples of an 18th century British colonial town plan in North America, although most buildings standing today are from the 19th century, and some of the old wooden clapboards and shingles are replaced by plastic imitations.
Lunenburg's 'Old Town' is a 'UNESCO World Heritage Site' since 1995 (one of only two cities in North America to enjoy that status).

This fine new bench in Lews Castle grounds has been placed beside the path leading up to Gallows Hill, and has views facing south toward Arnish across recently cleared woodland and newly constructed tracks.
The bench bears a plate in memory of Alaine Macleod Miller (nee Mackenzie) which has inscribed on it the phrase "the bright side of the road".
I usually try to give a reasonably detailed outline of the owners of the castles I write about. With the Gordons, this is too detailed a task, particularly as there have been so many of them, with so many branches of the family, over such a long period of time. So I will give an outline!
The Gordons were a Lowland family originally, the early generations being Lords of the Barony of Gordon, in the Merse. Like many other families back then, they took their name from their property. In the late 12th or early 13th, one branch of the family moved north to Huntly in Aberdeenshire, while the other remained on the Borders, but three generations later, the two families integrated (by marriage) and thereafter were based at Huntly.
During the Wars of Scottish Independence Sir Adam Gordon became a staunch supporter of Robert the Bruce. In reward for his faithful services, Bruce granted to him and his heirs the noble lordship of Strathbolgie (now Strathbogie), in Aberdeenshire, then in the Crown, by the forfeiture of David de Strathbogie, Earl of Athole.
Four generations later, a genealogical crisis occurred! Sir John Gordon of that ilk was killed at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. He had no legitimate sons, only two 'natural' sons - 'Jock' Gordon of Scurdargue (now the village of Rhynie) and Thomas 'Tam' Gordon of Rivven (Ruthven). All Gordon families descended directly in the male line from the early Gordons of Huntly, are descended from this pair.
His brother (some genealogies say son), Sir Adam Gordon of that ilk, was killed at the Battle of Homildon Hill in 1402. Adam's only son died childless shortly afterwards, leaving a daughter, Elizabeth, who inherited everything and married Sir Alexander de Seton. Their son Alexander Seton, was created 1st Earl of Huntly. For reasons I am not sure of and can't be bothered to look up, the 1st earl's eldest son, who kept the name Seton, inherited the property of Touch, while the 2nd son, who (like his younger siblings) changed his name to Gordon, inherited the Huntly earldom.
Thereafter, the picture is fairly uncomplicated. The Earldom of Huntly continued to the 6th Earl, who was raised to be 1st Marquess of Huntly. The 4th Marquess of Huntly was made a Duke - Duke of Gordon, and all went well until the 5th Duke, who had no male heir (nor were there any surviving heirs of the previous dukes, in consequence of which, the dukedom became extinct.
Fortunately for the pretensions of the Gordon family, the younger brother of George, 2nd Marquess of Huntly, was made 1st Earl of Aboyne, and because he was the son of a marquess, his descendant inherited the marquessate when the 5th duke died. So Charles, 5th Earl of Aboyne also became 9th Marquess of Huntly. The current owner, and indeed the restorer of this fine castle, is Granville Charles Gomer Gordon, 13th and current Marquess of Huntly. His son and heir Alastair used the Earl of Aboyne title.
Misery Hill derives its name from a time in history when the corpses of those executed at Gallows Hill near Upper Baggot Street were carted here and strung up to rot as a warning to other would-be troublemakers.
In the early 13th century there was a leper hospital not far from from where the High Tech companies are now located in Dublin. Sufferers who were unable to gain entrance to the hospital would spend the night at Misery Hill well away from the town and its citizens. Lazer Lane is nearby, the name relates to Lazarus who was cured by Jesus, and the area was the location of a Leper’s Hospital [Lazer Hill] from which pilgrims with leprosy sailed to religious sites in Europe hoping for miraculous cures.
Like most countries around the world, Ireland has a long history of leprosy. While leprosy has been eliminated here, Ireland has contributed to the ongoing the fight against the disease especially as an Irish chemist discovered part of the cure. It was while working on tuberculosis in the 1950s Vincent C. Barry and his team at Trinity College Dublin synthesised a compound called B663 (clofazimine) that proved effective against the bacterium that causes leprosy.
This is Kapellgatan 8, Södermalm / Southside.
This place used to be one of the city´s gallow hills.
The name of the street refers to an old Chapel that stood near to this place a couple of hundred years ago.
Much more of its history is hard to find, I guess people had little interest in writing about this place back then.

Heavy twisted gold bracelet with stud and loop fastening. The bracelet is formed of two thick gold rods twisted together, each tapering from its thickest point at the back to a smaller diameter near the fastening. The latter is in the form of a stud and loop, the loop being circular with an applied decorative 'plait' of gold wire. The bracelet belongs to a known Roman type though it is thicker and heavier than any other extant example.
There are very minor traces or wear on the body of the bracelet and on the surfaces of the clasp which would come into contact when closed, but these seem too slight to indicate any extensive use.
One of several objects which formed part of a remarkable hoard of late-Roman gold jewellery and silver tableware found near Thetford, Norfolk, in 1979.
The jewellery, most of which is in pristine, unused condition, clearly shows the late-Antique taste for elaboration and bright colour which had been evolving since the 3rd century CE. The stylistic links between individual items suggest that most were the products of a single workshop, quite possibly in Britain. The jewellery includes necklaces and clasps, five pendants, and four bracelets.

It was customary, mainly in terms of deterrence, to build gallows near the boundaries of municipalities along the main roads. The punishment by hanging existed in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries for serious crimes. The criminals were hanged as an example and exhibited until there was only a skeleton. The bones were put into the ground somewhere close to the timber gallows. Gallows Hill on the road from Münster (Germany) to Deventer (the Netherlands) had been used in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and during the subsequent reign of Bernhard von Galen, as bishop of Münster.
