Metal spoon (earth), ice (fire melts ice, makes water, fire (burns fuel from the earth). We know fire needs air, but air is an element, not shown.

Intense flames consuming old boards in a controlled burn, part of a series I did exploring the nature of fire. I've always found fire to be quite mesmerizing to watch. It's like clouds in a way, the flames are ever changing and the eye tends to want to make sense out of the randomness. I often sense shapes emerging from the flames, sometimes a face or some other recognizable object.

Plato seems to be the first that refers to the four elements, which Empedocles called them "roots", Aristotle makes them 5 that called "ether," Pythagoras and his arithmetic progression, Hippocrates humoral theory has developed to provide a ' etiology for diseases

Alchemy, chemistry, astrology

In Judaism "Elijah and Horeb" Christianity "Revelation", in Eastern thought are 5 "Straight" represented as the vertices of a pentagram, in Hindu thought always 5 "Straight," In thinking of ancient Buddhism " were the basis for understanding suffering and for the liberation of man from it, "The Japanese thought the 5 is" the void ", the Chinese thought to contain elements such as the Classical Greek philosophy

There is so much to say and know, but the version of Alfredo Di Prinzio new to me and I found it very curious

These seeds are the bane of my existence this year! I can't get rid of them. Their SHARP spikes jab and hurt. Bicyclists hate them. They look like some devil out of Greek Mythology, but they are real. Earth (and the nasty seeds that sometimes come out of it) is my element for this week's Macro Monday contribution. May your yard/garden be free of these. Any and all ideas on how to get rid of them, are welcomed. HMM

Taken for group 'Macro Mondays' 6th May 2019, theme 'Four Elements'.

Can you, too, show the correct structure of alanine, the zwitterionic structure, with your model kit?

"Materia" (Latin word for matter) is a series of four paintings that deal with the notion of chemical structure of the human body and its relation with the circular forms of the sacred geometry (mandalas), while attempting to transmit a sense of energetic nurturing through colors and symbolic images related to each one of the four elements - Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The base for the mandala drawing is the main structure of a molecule of ferritin, a protein that exists in almost all living organisms and that is responsible for the storage and release of iron, an essential element for life.

I created "Winter" back in 2004 and only recently did I get about to finishing the project I intended. I like them separately, but their real strength is in a group and it develops a different feel depending on how the images are placed. I'm rather pleased with the final result.

I am a big fan of beautiful calendar art. I simply love this one and the illustrations are so well done.

The Four Color Map Problem was solved with a proof of the Four Color Theorem in Mathematics that states that given any separation of a plane into contiguous regions, producing a figure called a map, no more than four colors are required to color the regions of the map so that no two adjacent regions have the same color. Thus Cartographers (Map Makers) only need four colors to cover a map to properly distinguish different regions. This photo shows four of the tools that a cartographer or draftsman might have used to create a map in the past. Today computers assist the process. Since the tools in this photo are all depicted as contiguous simply connected regions, they themselves are a proper map. I could have selected more tools to fill up the plane but in keeping with the “fourness” of the Flickr Friday theme I restricted myself to four tools. But my four elements are really not drafting tools but colors. To me, this is a very elegant theorem. The photo provided me with the outlines of the shapes and it looked quite different until I got my Photoshop Crayolas out and colored in the shapes using only four colors.

I recall attending a presentation where I worked at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque NM in the 1970’s. The presenter was a brilliant scientist from England who could have made a great living as a stand-up comic. He talked about the Four Color Map problem.

For many years some Mathematicians thought that five colors were needed to color a map. In 1976: Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken proved the Four Color theorem. As far back as 1879: Alfred Kempe tried to prove that in the Four-Color Theorem that only four colors suffice to color any map. His proof was discredited and it was not until 1976 that an acceptable proof was found. The final proof relies on checking a large number of cases by computer, sparking ongoing debate over what a proof really is.

Anyway, the brilliant English Scientist talked about the Four Color Problem. He noted that in England it was known as the Four Colour Problem. He remarked that some Americans dislike seeing a “U” in the spelling of Colour, so he drew a slash in the spelling to eliminate the offensive “U”. Then he said “To be entirely consistent we should also eliminate the offensive unnecessary “U” in Four, leaving us with the “For Color Problem”. He sure got a big laugh with that piece of dry English humor.

You may want to consult my Flickr Photo stream for a view of the unedited photo which served to define the outlines of the tools. See www.flickr.com/photos/dick-thompson-sandian/

In the classical view of the universe, all things are made up of four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. This image represents all four. (And they are ALL there!)

The 4 elements - wind, water, earth and fire.

The seeds of the dandelion are designed like little umbrellas, so to speak, in a structure called Pappus. The air pressure that is created around this structure is called SVR (separated vortex ring) and enables a stable flight without tumbling, making sure the seeds are spread at a large range.
