So after all this time, I finally happened upon a public bench, bran new, that hadn't been sprayed all over with pointless graffiti, peppered with bird shit or had bits and pieces missing, offering a fantastic composition shot with leading lines and no interruptions or disturbances.
By the way, Formicidae is the official name for Ants, which I usually find scurrying along on their daily activities on benches, I suspect the word is formed from Formic Acid which I believe Ants utilise as weapons and for creating smells for communication. Thank god we don't do that, Humans just yell at each other across social media; aren't we so impressive?!
I hope everyone's week is going well and so as always, thank you! :)

Individual specimens keep appearing on the edge of the terrace.
As a source of food for bees and bumblebees, I poured a little water over a sugar cube in a small bowl. In the sun, a sugar level developed from this on which an ant stayed. She was so busy with lunches that I was able to take a photo of her in peace.
For bees you have to keep the sugar solution thin and renew it twice a day.
Have fun trying.

Although not particularly heavy, my existing full-frame gear has been giving me a pain in the neck recently. For less than the price of a new lens I was considering, I was able to get an Olympus macro set-up, which is significantly lighter and which I can comfortablly hold with one hand. Although the RAW images are not as flexible, another advantage for macro is more pixels on the subject. The ant is about 2mm long and the shot was at 1:1 magnification.
A few drops of water collected on the surface of a leaf have formed a drinking trough for this tiny (3.5 mm) forest dwelling ant.

February 27, 2022; Leon County, Tallahassee, Florida; found on the hallway wall inside my home. She was passive and easy to collect. I observed her for the afternoon until she expired. I had read an essay by E.O. Wilson where he described that as ants aged, they were given more risky duties outside the nest such as foraging and defense. When they reached full senescence, they would leave the nest completely to die. I wonder if this was an example.
