Unbeknownst to many, Los Angeles has served as one of the most important oil provinces on the planet. From the initial discoveries near the turn of the 20th century, through the roaring 1920s, and into the present, oil has often guided and defined the development of the city. What's interesting, however, is that this fact is so often eclipsed by Los Angeles' well-documented histories as a center of film, entertainment, boosterism and agriculture. Forgetting Oildorado excavates the city's rich oil history, examines the slow decline of the local industry, and uncovers many of the active oil fields that lie hidden in plain sight, in the very midst of this teeming city.
This 120-page book includes text based upon Frank Ruchala Jr.'s monumental examination of Los Angeles' oil history, oiLA, with historical imagery sourced from Early California Oil by Kenny Franks and Paul Lambert. All other photography was shot by me, using a combination of Digital SLR, 35mm SLR, Medium Format Holga, and 35mm Lomo cameras.

Dainty light blue flowers cover the plants.
Requires no vernalization to initiate flowering, from sowing to flowering in 9-13 weeks according to growing season. After 7 days the seeds germinated! Remember ?
Has olvidado
que yo aún seguia viva?
¿Has olvidado
todo lo que alguna vez hemos tenido?
¿Lo has olvidado?
¿Te has olvidado

"If I died, we'd be together
I can't always just forget her
But she could try
At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever ever...
Ever...
Get the feeling that you're never
All alone and I remember now
At the top of my lungs in my arms she dies
She dies
At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? should I?
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me."

Right before I caught the bus to go to school on Friday. = )
Every morning as I cycle I think I am likely to overtaken by Dr. H a local brain surgeon, who despite being my age, can cycle faster than I can. I rarely see him but the fear of being overtaken encourages me not to hang around. Today, however, the sky looked like this so I stopped to take this photo.
I mixed up his personal and family names. He is Dr. H with a personal name beginning with Y.

Growing amongst all the moss and weed in Juliet's front lawn, I found this lone Myosotis which had managed to avoid all the moss killer Juliet has been putting down in vain to keep the moss from strangulating the grass
The 25th of April is ANZAC Day in Australia & New Zealand, commemorating the battle between Australasian forces & the Turkish army on the Gallipoli peninsula. It has become a day of remembrance for not only that campaign, but all battles & wars we have fought in & is felt more personally by us than Remembrance Day on the 11th of November.
Lest We Forget is the motto of the Returned Servicemen's League. The source is a poem written in 1914 about the sacrifice made by soldiers in service of their country. If you happen to be in an RSL club at sunset on any day of the year, you will stand, face the west & participate in the reading of lines from the poem & respond accordingly. To not do so is not only disrespectful, but downright dangerous... we take the tradition very seriously

One of my favourites out of all the colours! So here you go this is red from my eyes.
"Red is the color of blood, and as such has strong symbolism as life and vitality. It brings focus to the essence of life and living with emphasis on survival. Red is also the color of passion and lust."

From Milan Kundera's "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" (1979):
In February 1948, the Communist leader Klement Gottwald stepped out on the balcony of a Baroque palace in Prague to harangue hundreds of thousands of citizens massed in Old Town Square. That was a great turning point in the history of Bohemia. A fateful moment.
Gottwald was flanked by his comrades, with Clementis standingn close to him. It was snowing and cold, and Gottwald was bareheaded. Bursting with solicitude, Clementis took off his fur hat and set it on Gottwald's head.
The propaganda section made hundreds of thousands of copies of the photograph taken on the balcony where Gottwald, in a fur hat and surrounded by his comrades, spoke to the people. On that balcony the history of Communist Bohemia began. Every child knew that photograph, from seeing it on posters and in schoolbooks and museums.
Four years later, Clementis was charged with treason and hanged. The propaganda section immediately made him vanish from history and, of course, from all photographs. Ever since, Gottwald has been alone on the balcony. Where Clementis stood, there is only the balcony. Where Clementis stood, there is only teh bare palace wall. Nothing remains of Clementis but theh fur hat on Gottwald's head.
Saturday morning, Apcar, his dad, and I headed "into town" for nine holes of golf at the St Maries municipal course. The amenities are a little rustic, but the course and the setting is unparalleled. Apcar considers it his favorite course, anywhere.
Incredible historical images are paired with a design strategy that's a bit messier and more collaged than elsewhere in the book, meant to mimic the messiness of oil.
