Here's the legendary
Mr. Brian Wilson -
of Beach Boys fame,
of course. I had the honor
of having lunch with him
yesterday - at the deli where
he eats almost every day -
(he had a tuna wrap,
strawberries and a diet coke) -
and I interviewed him
and photographed him.
I have interviewed Brian
before
(it's in my book
"Songwriters On
Songwriting, Expanded Edition"
by Paul Zollo - amazon
always has got it) -
But this one was the best-
we spoke of all things
-including his belief that
George Gershwin writes
rock and roll. (To prove it,
he sang me bits of
"Rhapsody in Blue" with
much rock verve). And we spoke
about his great new
album, "Lucky Old Sun."
And about his brothers,
his dad, the Beatles,
his favorite keys,
Van Dyke Parks, and much
else. God only knows
everything we touched on.
As he and his music
is all about the beaches
of our town,
it seemed quite right to
bring him here -
the Santa Monica Pier
at night - with its new
ferris wheel forever spinning.

He was a very kind man,
quite gracious - as are almost
all of the homeless men and women
I have met, and I have
met many. Sitting in
the sun, trying to roll
through another
day.
