Farmers put in their sweat and blood for months to produce food. But a lot of it gets wasted due to poor storage facilities. The Mega Food Parks project in which we plan to operationalize 42 food parks will provide a modern infrastructure for arresting post-harvest losses of horticultural and non-horticultural produce and provide impetus to the growth of food processing sector in the country. This project will help in providing better prices to farmers, reduce wastage of perishables, add value to agricultural produce and create huge opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment for the youth. We reviewed the food parks project and are satisfied with its progress.

Inaugurating India Pavilion at GulFood 2016, Dubai was a sheer delight. It is an avenue for interaction of the Indian exhibitiors with the sagacious investors from UAE. While India has the capability of production of food grains, fruits, vegetables and milk but lacks food processing infrastracture, UAE has surplus funds and technology but has dearth of raw material. If they come together, then “Make in India” food products can not only be used for UAE and India, but can be exported to other countries too. I also had a very fruitful meeting with with Essa Abdulla Al Ghurair, Chairman of Al Ghurair Group to explore opportunities.

I felt an indescribable sense of satisfaction while inaugurating the 8th Global Food Processing Summit 2016 organised by ASSOCHAM in New Delhi. Events like these are the steps to make India the leader in food processing. Food processing can significantly reduce wastage, generate employment, offer better prices to farmers and help in reducing food inflation. Our emphasis is to promote value addition at the farm-gate level and encourage entrepreneurship. We aim to make 42 mega food parks operational by end of 2019, which will yield a potential investment of about Rs 14,000 crore and would benefit about 12.5 lakh farmers.

The financial benefit under the Maternity benefit scheme of the Punjab Building & Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (PBOCW), has been enhanced from Rs. 5000 to 21000 per child up to two children of female construction worker. The Board has also approved the Mobile Van Scheme for detection of Silicosis and other diseases of registered beneficiaries of the Board and their families. The board will also provide free tooth care and dentures to the construction workers.

Mina Sidat Bersatu Cooperative - one of FAO IFish project beneficiaries in Cilacap, Central Java - taking out eels (Anguila bicolor) bones. The cooperative is one of few eel business surviving the COVID 19 pandemic

Heralding a new dawn in Punjab in terms of skill development and professional education, 200 Nanhi Chhaan Rural Skill Development Centre for girls have been opened across the state. These centres would train girls in professional stream of Beauty and Wellness with sub-courses of senior makeup artist and hair therapist. The girls passing out from the four-month course would be awarded certificates by the academy of renowned hair stylist Jawed Habib. Punjab government plans to open one such centre in every block, which afterwards would come around to one centre after a cluster of every 10 villages. These centres would be instrumental in creating self-employment avenues for the trainees.
