The pohutukawa or New Zealand Christmas Tree, metsiderosis excelsa, is one of the most outstanding plants of the entire New Zealand flora. A tougher or more adaptable coastal tree would be hard to find, for the pohutukawa will gain a foothold in the most inhospitable of rock crevices where continual lashings of salt-laden winds and drenchings of salt water are the norm, and life giving fresh water and nutrients are scarce in the extreme.
When I visited Toyko, many years ago, I visited the Iris Garden at Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya. It was super beautiful with the most Irises I have ever seen. There were many photographers and artists, photographing and painting the flowers - quite lovely. In the trees, beside the large pond, was a beautiful tea house with Geisha ladies to serve the tea ceremony. In a glade beside the gardens was a little shop where every item they sold featured Irises. I still have the Iris vase I bought at that shop.
Water lilies are plants that grow in still or slowly moving water. They like ponds, streams, and the edges of lakes in tropical and mild areas. Their floating leaves are often called lily pads. Frogs like to sit on them.
Water lilies grow from the muddy bottom of a body of water. Thick underwater stems are buried in the mud. Long stalks reach up from the stems to support the round, waxy leaves
