I got up at 3 something that morning, rode a bicycle for 7 km in the dark. Yeah it was pitch black out there, since there wasn't any street lights. yuck! I got there at almost 4, just in time to see the beginning of the ritual.
This ritual commences every morning at 4 am when monks wash the face and brush the teeth of the Buddha image.). It is an elaborate ritual performed for over an hour by a senior monk dressed in monastic attire, assisted by several lay helpers, dressed in white and wearing formal headdress. As soon as the drums are struck, the senior monk residing in the adjoining monastery enters the sanctum and starts the formal face washing ritual with a succession of fresh towels, offered by devotees. He then performs the act of cleaning the Mahamuni's teeth with a large brush followed by one more sequence of cleaning with fresh towels. After this, sandalwood paste is applied to the image and it is again cleaned with towels and finally sprinkled with scented water. After the ceremony is completed, the used towels are returned to the devotees who keep these towels with reverence in their home shrines.

Normal Skin: start with a one-to-one ratio of castor oil and extra virgin olive oil
Acne Prone or Oily Skin: try three parts castor oil to one part extra virgin olive oil
Dry Skin: try one part castor oil to three parts extra virgin olive oil
Shake the crap out of it before each use so the oils blend!Now put a quarter size amount in your palm, rub your hand together, and slowly massage it in with your finger tips. Do this while your face is dry and do it for about a minute. Next, wet a washcloth with hot water & put it over your face until it's room temperature. This steams all the crap out of your pores (takes about a minute). now wipe of the oil with your washcloth. No moisturizer is needed!

Some months ago I was traveling by car from my home in Aalborg, Denmark to Odense. A 250 km trip. For the first time I tried to offer a lift on an online ride sharing service. Amanda happened to go the same way.
We talked about her family background in Uganda, Poland and Denmark and that she is educating as a dietitian. It also turned out that Amanda had tried a little modeling for photographers before. Of course I asked if she would like to try again and she agreed. We tried out a photo shoot in my apartment. I asked if I could spray water on her face to get that "sweaty" look. The wash bowl was something I just came up with the same morning. Fortunately I knew a second hand store where I could get one.
And that was how I met Amanda.

I spread all of my stuff out on a towel on day 2 of my trip and look at how COLORFUL I am! I felt so sunny and California...

After all these years.....face washing by mum has not changed a bit! Thank heavens for some things that don't change!
