On a sunny morning in St Augustine, Florida, FEC 218 works its way north through the marshes as it closesin on Bowden yard.

The Florida East Coast Railway Little River Wye is situated between the communities of Little Haiti and Little River, comprised of two mainline stretches of track that meet at this location. Coming from the west and turning 90° north is the FEC’s roughly 368 mainline running between Hialeah and Jacksonville. That section of the wye sees the majority of freight movements, daily amount varies depending on the day of the week. Up to six cross-system freights, four rock shuttles, three yard jobs, and a local can be seen passing through the wye in a 24 hour period on the right day.

The stretch of track extending from the north end of the wye headed south is the FEC Port Lead, primarily utilized for Brightline services between Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and soon, Orlando. A south leg connecting the Port Lead to the FEC Mainline is in place on the south end of the wye, which is only utilized by FEC yard jobs, those being the Port Trains to PortMiami and the DTN yard job if they need to spin their train around to access customers on the West Main.

On a crisp late November morning in Little River, FL, a Friday edition of southbound FEC 101-25 takes in the tight curve on the north leg of the Little River Wye bound for Hialeah Yard, some seven miles to the west of the location. Trains taking the mainline leg of the Wye are limited to 35 MPH, as the tracks are not superelevated for higher speeds. Leading the somewhat poorly blocked 105 car manifest is #FEC821 [ES44C4], paired with #FEC714 [SD40-2], split by FXE 0013, one of two Ferromex/GrupoMexico liquified natural gas fuel tenders being utilized by the FEC. Such a consist framed from the air at the Wye presents an angle that’s tougher to pull off from ground level.

Bathed in a setting sun’s final rays of sunlight, Florida East Coast Railway train 208-06 takes in the curves through ‘PEV Storage’, wrapping around Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s [FLL/KFLL] east side on the afternoon of Saturday, April 6th, 2024. A now-rare pair of matching Champion-paint ES44C4/LNG/ES44C4 power sets, led by #FEC821, take charge of the afternoon junker from Hialeah Yard to Jacksonville’s Bowden Yard. The days’ train is comprised of loaded limerock, domestic FEC intermodal, and a handful of carload manifest on the bottom, with no setout at Fort Pierce needed [Waste Management IM handled by 191/290 on Saturdays]. Since FEC 206 is abolished on Saturday’s, 208-06 had its own power [821/306/802], plus what would’ve been 206’s [811/304/807], moved north to Jacksonville to keep the power cycle moving for the next day.

Thirty-seven miles south of Jacksonville, the towers of the historic Ponce de Leon Hotel rise in the backround as afternoon train 107 snakes its way through St. Augustine. Of course the Ponce de Leon was built by the FEC's founder Henry Flager, and now it is one of the main buildings for Flagler College.

Those Bobcats and piles of construction material to the left are related to the railroad too, as part of the ongoing project to replace the bridge over the San Sebastian River just around the curve to the left.

GEVO haters, turn your head now. Two Florida East Coast Champion ES44C4s (821, 807) lead FEC train 101 across Spruce Creek just south of Spruce Creek siding in Port Orange, Florida. I have to say, I wasn't 100% comfortable being this close to the water!

Florida East Coast (FEC) ES44C4 no. 804 - still in its "Champion" paint scheme - is seen racing past another train delivering aggregates to the Cemex City Point facility in Cocoa, FL.

Florida East Coast Train 101 passes through Melbourne, Fla. with two Champion-painted GE ES44C4s on lead. This attractive livery is not long for this world as FEC owner Grupo México is going with a new scheme much like their their big railroad, Ferromex.
