OK so all snowflakes have 6 points.

I guess this guy wanted to be different than all other snowflakes?

I mean REALLY different?

I think he has some 'splaining to do.

Also: do not run and find some donuts, tea, chocolate and a mound of good books, start a fire and hibernate in the den just yet. This is a flake from last year. It'll be ok.

Of course, the Native Americans were here first, followed by Hernando DeSoto who visited the area (aka known as the Paramount Chiefdom of Ocute) in 1540. Scull Shoals is located on the Oconee River and started out as a frontier settlement in 1782; after 11 years of Indian raids, a fort was built in 1793. Following the treaty of 1802 and the removal of the Creek Indians, the settlement expanded quickly and soon included a grist mill, saw mill and cotton gin. Georgia's first paper mill was built here in 1811, possibly as an addition to the water-powered grist mill, but it was in operation for only 4 years because its operators went bankrupt after the War of 1812. Yet, the village continued to grow, adding more mills, bridges, houses and stores. There was a setback in 1945 when a fire destroyed all wooden mill buildings which were rebuilt in brick and soon more than 600 textile workers were employed here. The Civil War brought economic depression and the company town changed ownership several times. In 1877-1878, the infamous Penitentiary Company No. 3 moved in to provide convict labor.

Always subject to droughts and floods, Scull Shoals was devastated by a major flood in 1887 from which it never recovered. The town was abandoned by 1900. Any metal left behind was salvaged for use during both World Wars, and the buildings were dismantled. Today, Scull Shoals is part of the Oconee National Forest and an archeological site.

A couple of weeks ago, I got the last lot of Merseyside PTE tickets that adambrown400 had for sale on eBay. I wasn't going to buy these in the first place, but, seeing as no-one else was, I thought I may as well have them and very interesting they were too. Among this little lot were two second class child Interchange tickets.

Mersey Interchange services were six experimental "bus to rail" services in the Liverpool area, using specially marked buses and one of these was service A1. Anyway, it's all explained here on page 27 of the North/South Divisions timetable, dated 6 May 1974.

Let me explain... :-) OX is a self-described crash course on loving Calgary, started by a local film maker and artist Sharon Stevens... She started by encouraging some friends to identify and describe their favourite spot in Calgary, and has now opened up it up anyone who wants to participate... That would be that red sign on the pillar to mark your spot... Now if only I can figure out how to upload this to their site, you can find it here - www.essense.ca/ox/

My OX?

After some deliberation and much thought, I almost went with Olympic Plaza, but instead I really need to travel up Stephen Avenue from the plaza a couple of blocks west to The Bay store... My memories of this building date back to the early 1980's when my mom worked here part-time after being a homemaker for many years... I remember trips downtown tagging along with dad as a young child to pick up mom from work, and the treks down to the basement (back then women's clothing) waiting for her to get off work... But back then we basically drove down, parked the car, and headed straight to the store, repeat the same steps in reverse order to head home, no hanging around... After my mom stopped working there I didn't really go downtown much at all... Now as an adult in recent years, and someone who who loves street photography, the facade of The Bay store has been used many times for subject matter... I just love how these benches that line the south side of the store become a gathering spot for all sorts of people, and are just simply great for people watching... To me The Bay store has now become a central spot to explore Stephen Avenue (heading both east and west) for my photography... [rough draft, will likely be edited further]

Okay this might need some explaining. Botticelli (really called Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi) was an Italian painter most known for works that, frankly, ooze 15th century art style all over the place. If that's your thing, exquisite, do enjoy.

I don't like it.

However, this painting, and another next to it that wasn't properly photographed, are almost hyper-realistic compared to his other works. In fact, it's so deviant that I would liken it to the art of 20th century American comic painters (meaning comic book writers whose artists worked with oil paints, rather than pencil, marker, or watercolour/pastel) I find this fascinating - here we have a work of art 500 years older than contemporary art, looking contemporary. By all accounts, that is downright bizarre. I love it.
