On Saturday, July 10, the Red Cross tested our ability to respond to a large-scale earthquake in the Seattle area. As part of the state-wide Sound Shake 2010 drill (www.soundshake2010.org), more than 200 people came from across King and Kitsap Counties to set up and staff two Red Cross shelters, one in Renton and one in Federal Way.

Explains that a mother promised to have this grotto constructed if Mary returned her son safe to her after WWII; he returned, and she strove to get this erected, and succeeded; in time, it came to be a monument to the local war dead, as well.

Let me explain: A tree seedling took root on a relatively new stump. As the seedling grew, the stump nursed the seedling by decaying and providing nutrients. The seedling grew and the roots worked their way to the ground as the seedling grew to be a fine strapping adult tree. Hence, the formation seen in the above photo.

Taken with the 35mm f/1.8G DX lens, though interestingly, it doesn't have a hard cutoff from the image circle, which appears to be plenty large for an FX-sized sensor at f/1.8.

A sign explaining the history of McVeigh's Water Wheel which is located in the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park.
Referring back to my recent "any ideas?", I have re-examined and I think it goes like this:-
The idea seems to have been that when the water level rises the lever drops out of that retaining loop and the gate closes with the force of gravity, blocking off pedestrian access to the area about to become flooded. These days I rather think it will need human assistance thanks to a combination of silting-up and gradual movement of the concrete path.
I may be wrong, of course.
