Refugee children in Uganda encounter numerous obstacles to accessing education, including language barriers, lack of documentation, financial constraints and psychosocial trauma. These challenges hinder their ability to enrol in the formal education systems of their new country. This can mean they miss out vital years of learning and lack the opportunities of non-refugee children.

In 2018, Olielie and her family arrived in Uganda from DRC as refugees, having lost everything during the war. In Uganda, Olielie had no documents, didn’t speak the language and had just lost her father. The family had no income and Olielie wasn’t able to go to school. For three years, the family suffered and Olielie’s future did not look good.

After nearly losing hope, in 2021, Olielie discovered the UPSHIFT programme through a friend. UPSHIFT is a program run by UNICEF that aims to provide underprivileged youth with social innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities. She learned skills in teamwork, innovation, and creativity. Olielie and her team addressed teenage pregnancies in their community by creating and selling bags and clothes, conducting sex education sessions, and making reusable sanitary pads. She was even able to sell these and make a small income for her family.

This signalled a shift in Oliele’s outlook and determination to continue learning.

Realising the importance of education, Olielie enrolled in the Accelerated Education Program (AEP) in 2022 at Kashojwa Primary School. Run by UNICEF and ILO, AEP offers flexible education suitable for refugees of different ages who have missed school years and need to catch up with learning. Language barriers and lack of access to income for women remain challenges in accessing education, but programs like AEP provide translation and support to overcome these barriers.

Olielie excelled, particularly enjoying science and maths. She became a prefect gaining leadership, communication, and cooperation skills through the Life Skills Club. It was here that she started to inspire others to use education as a springboard for a better life. Using her new-found leadership and communication skills she was also able to help her sister process her trauma and inspired her to also join the AEP programme.

Olielie passed her Primary Leaving Examination in 2023 with impressive results. After nearly six years out of the formal system, this gave her the documentation needed to access mainstream education once again.

Recognising Olielie’s potential, UNHCR awarded her a scholarship for mainstream formal education at Nakivale Secondary School. Here, Olielie confirmed her passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Supported, by UNICEF?, Olielie started to attend a the Cyber School Technology Program, which promotes additional learning of Science, Tecnhology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects. It is here that she has started to dream of becoming an engineer. Through engineering Oliele believes that improve the infrastructure of Uganda.

Due to the years she lost as a refugee with war raging around her, Olielie’s education is only just beginning. However, as a result of many UN agencies all coming together to support the education of refugees, Olielie’s path to becoming an engineer and following her dream is now more real than ever.
