Texas House Speaker Joe Straus was interviewed by Texas Tribune CEO and Editor-in-Chief Evan Smith at The Texas Tribune Festival on Oct. 17, 2015.

TEXAS MONTHLY editor Evan Smith, as I mentioned earlier, appears regularly on KLRU, Austin's PBS franchise, with his own interview show. Evidently he'd designed his questions so as to avoid shedding new light on blogging or on Ana Marie; everyone in attendance already pretty much knew the answers to the questions he asked her. In short, he was there to waste our time.

She was articulate, as I'd expected she would be, but spoke really, really fast; so fast that I thought maybe she was just nervous. Evan Smith was in a rush himself, for that matter. In a way she reminded me a little of New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, another articulate, seemingly ill-at-ease fast-talker, whom Wonkette dissed succinctly early in the interview.

She admitted to having voted for Nader in 2000. Responding to a chorus of groans from the audience, she added defensively, "I voted in Washington, DC! A vote for Nader there didn't mean a thing!" (I'm paraphrasing)

I asked one of the last two questions so I could get her to turn around in her chair and look in my direction for a change. She listened very closely to me with a big smile; and except for Evan Smith's immediate recap of my question so the rest of the assembled could hear my brilliant query--during which she momentarily turned away from me--she looked right into my lovesick eyes and answered me. I'm so glad I hadn't spoiled the moment with some useless and crippling question about blogging.

UPDATE: This photo is the first of mine to reach 1000 views (1/9/06) and no one's ever made a comment. Why this photo? I have no fucking idea.

Ana Marie Cox was in Austin this winter to give the keynote address (actually an interview) for the 2005 South By Southwest Film/Music Festival taking place all over Austin. And to receive the "Bloggie" for "Best Political Blog" of the year.

She gave a fast-paced, 45 minute interview with Evan Smith, editor of TEXAS MONTHLY and host of arguably the most tedious locally-produced PBS interview program ever. The photo above is one I snapped just before she took her seat onstage.

In case anyone asks: there isn't a single photo of Ana Marie online that does justice to her beauty. A redhead with very pale skin (photos of her I've seen online make her look like a grown-up Billy Mumy), she's short (I passed her in the hallway on my way to the interview and mistakenly thought she was just another pretty 22 year old Texas coed). And hot.

Also you can kind of make out a nipple or two. Sorry, it's a hormonal thing with me.

One of the most startling pieces of info to come out of this interview is Wonkette's revelation that she attended the University of Texas in Austin for a year in the 1990's; and since her father once was a professor there also, she's not new to the area. She briefly flashed the UT "Hook 'em!" hand thing--which, in case you're reading this in Kazakhstan, means that you fold in your middle and ring fingers and hold them down with your opposeable thumb and flash the remaining two fingers--which my camera caught, sort of.

I didn't go to UT--in fact, I've hated the place since the night a pack of UT frats trashed my ride in front of me in 1985--so I'm relieved that she transferred out at the first opportunity. If anything, her scraping the dirt of that overrated cow college from her Mary Janes and seeking culture, fulfillment, and love elsewhere makes Ana Marie Cox even more beautiful to me than she was when she took the stage 50 seconds earlier.
