Kyoto (京都市 Kyōto-shi, pronounced [kʲoːꜜto] (About this sound listen), pronounced [kʲoːtoꜜɕi] (About this sound listen); UK: /kɪˈoʊtoʊ/, US: /kiˈoʊ-/, or /ˈkjoʊ]) is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.

"Acrocorinth (Greek: Ακροκόρινθος), 'Upper Corinth', the acropolis of ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. 'It is the most impressive of the acropoleis of mainland Greece,' in the estimation of George Forrest. Acrocorinth was continuously occupied from archaic times to the early 19th century. Along with Demetrias and Chalcis, the Acrocorinth during the Hellenistic period formed one of the so-called 'Fetters of Greece' – three fortresses garrisoned by the Macedonians to secure their control of the Greek city-states. The city's archaic acropolis, already an easily defensible position due to its geomorphology, was further heavily fortified during the Byzantine Empire as it became the seat of the strategos of the thema of Hellas and later of the Peloponnese. It was defended against the Crusaders for three years by Leo Sgouros.

"Afterwards it became a fortress of the Frankish Principality of Achaea, the Venetians and the Ottoman Turks. With its secure water supply, Acrocorinth's fortress was used as the last line of defence in southern Greece because it commanded the Isthmus of Corinth, repelling foes from entry into the Peloponnese peninsula. Three circuit walls formed the man-made defence of the hill. The highest peak on the site was home to a temple to Aphrodite which was converted to a church, and then became a mosque. The American School's Corinth Excavations began excavations on it in 1929. Currently, Acrocorinth is one of the most important medieval castle sites of Greece.

"In a Corinthian myth related in the 2nd century CE to Pausanias, Briareus, one of the Hecatonchires, was the arbitrator in a dispute between Poseidon and Helios, between the sea and the sun: his verdict was that the Isthmus of Corinth belonged to Poseidon and the acropolis of Corinth (Acrocorinth) to Helios."

When the market is open, the masters of the estimate (keurmeesters) and traders get to work.

Estimating the cheese is not limited to control its appearance. Cheese is also tapped and using a special instrument, the "cheese scope ', a track (a core of cheese) is extracted. This piece is crumbled, felt and of course tasted to assess its taste, fat and moisture.

I saw this alligator in a state park in Florida. It is about 13 feet long. The length of the alligator can be estimated by looking at the length from the nostrils to the eyes. That number (in inches) is an estimation of how long the alligator is (in feet). This photo was taken on April 17, 2009.

I wish this were a better photo because it is an interesting fly, but this is the best I got. The fly has the iridescent green/blue colors of a common Blow Fly (family Calliphoridae in the order Diptera) in the genus Lucilia - trash flies - and maybe it is. But I found this one in the woods, working flowers of native native Scale Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum) in the Asteraceae plant family. I don't think it's a trash fly. The Fly Day Friday group has a two photo limit, so I won't post this one. But HFDF anyway! (Paradise, Santa Ynez River, 23 September 2015)

It looks a bit like the "Secondary Screwworm" (Cochliomyia macellaria) fly to me. See this photo and the photos at BugGuide. These flies are green or blue, and have a white or yellow beard. It's hard to judge colors with these iridescent critters.

If I'm right, this fly is in the family Calliphoridae, but it's more interesting than the common trash flies. The fly is native to North America. Its larvae feed on dead tissue, including human tissue. But it is the "secondary" screwworm that only feeds on already dead tissue, requiring an exit would to infest. It actually has some medical uses. It has forensic use as the "principal species on which to base postmortem interval estimations". And they have been used "in some cases as surgical maggots" to clean only necrotic tissue from wounds. There's more info at Wikipedia.

The dandelion reproduces asexually, so seed production usually happens without pollination. Seed production can range from 54 to 172 seeds per head and a single dandelion can produce more than 2000 seeds. Dandelion seeds are non-dormant when first produced. There have been some estimations that more than 240,000,000 seeds per acre are produced annually by dandelions.

My wife and I are infrequent Walmart shoppers—at best estimation. But we ventured to the store in La Mesa, Calif., because eyedrops were in stock and priced considerably less than other retailers—whether local or online. We made the trip more meaningful by walking around the quaint downtown district and shopping at two bookstores.

Inside Walmart, I laughed at one of the displays. I can think of so many ways that this Dr. Seuss character is the wrong choice for promoting anything. He steals Christmas from Whoville. That said, some adults (and their kids) might delight in what they see as the good Grinch. No disrespect to them, but he wears a sinister grin.

With the exception of small businesses, retail really rates poorly for customer service—particularly since SARS-CoV-2(severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2)/COVID-19 mandates inflicted so much economic and societal misery. So I was surprised—no shocked—to find the Walmart bustling, not only with customers but employees, who while actually being busy (e.g., working) were available. The eyedrops were locked up, and when I pressed the call button someone appeared within 90 seconds to open the case. How many places have you been lately where you had to hunt down staffers, assuming any were available? Let me give a hat tip to Walmart.
