When the City of Monticello purchased this 1999 E-One pumper on a Freightliner chassis, it came with something no other fire apparatus had ever had -- air conditioning.
Engine 1, so named because it was the lowest available number, has the department's second top-mounted pump and is the third piece of apparatus called Engine 1.
The department's very first motorized pumper was a 1929 American LaFrance on a GMC chassis with a Buick motor. It was purchased in 1930 for $5,000. The second "Engine 1" was a 1968 American LaFrance pumper on a Ford tilt-cab chassis. It had a 500 gallon tank and was the first engine to feature a 1,000 gpm pump.
