The San Francisco Fire Department lost two of its members from Engine Company 26, who were both critically injured during an explosion while bravely fighting a house fire in the Diamond Heights neighborhood on June 2, 2011. Both died at the hospital as a result of their injuries after all rescussitative measures were taken by the Emergency Trauma staff at San Francisco General Hospital.

Days later firefighters from around California and around the country gathered to pay their respects during a funeral service. In this sequence we see some of the equipment from the East Bay Area.

The Coupe was the second variant of the Beta family to appear, debuting in 1973 as a two door Coupe, with a 93 inch wheelbase. The bodywork was developed inhouse by a Lancia team led by Aldo Castagno, with Pietro Castagnero acting as styling consultant. Castagnero had also styled the Beta's predecessor, the Lancia Fulvia. Due to the fuel crisis the Coupes launch was postponed until 1974, at launch 1.6 and 1.8 ltr. engines.were available, replaced in late 1975 by new .6 and 2.0ltr engines, followed by a 1.3 in early 1976. In 1978 automatic transmission and power steering became available. In 1981 the car received a minor facelift and at the same time the a 2.0ltr engine with fuel Bosch electronic fuel injection. In 1983 a range topping 2.0 VX (Volumex) supercharged was launched with an output of 135 bhp.

The Fairchild Republic A-10-C Warthog The Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). Commonly referred to by its nicknames Warthog or Hog, its official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II fighter that was effective at attacking ground targets. The A-10 was designed for close-in support of ground troops, close air support (CAS), and providing quick-action support for troops against helicopters and ground forces. It entered service in 1976 and is the only production-built aircraft that has served in the USAF that was designed solely for CAS. Its secondary mission is to provide forward air controller – airborne (FAC-A) support, by directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets. Aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10.

The A-10 was intended to improve on the performance of the A-1 Skyraider and its poor firepower. The A-10 was designed around the 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon. Its airframe was designed for durability, with measures such as 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of titanium armor to protect the cockpit and aircraft systems, enabling it to absorb a significant amount of damage and continue flying. Its short takeoff and landing capability permits operation from airstrips close to the front lines, and its simple design enables maintenance with minimal facilities. The A-10 served in Operation Desert Shield, and Operation Desert Storm, the American intervention against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, where the A-10 distinguished itself. The A-10 also participated in other conflicts such as Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, and against ISIL in the Middle East.

The A-10A single-seat variant was the only version produced, though one pre-production airframe was modified into the YA-10B twin-seat prototype to test an all-weather night capable version. In 2005, a program was started to upgrade remaining A-10A aircraft to the A-10C configuration with modern avionics for use of precision weaponry. The U.S. Air Force had stated the F-35 would replace the A-10 as it entered service, but this remains highly contentious within the Air Force and in political circles. With a variety of upgrades and wing replacements, the A-10's service life may be extended to 2040.

Having thrown out the original print of the photograph I wasn't quite sure what this vehicle was. It appeared to have a vertical rear transverse engine ...unusual in single-deck buses. Might it be a Daimler Fleetline with single-deck bodywork? It was to that invaluable resource Bus Lists on the Web (http://www.buslistsontheweb.co.uk/) that I turned. Here it was given as a Daimler SRL6, which would make it a Daimler Roadliner with Leyland engine I think. Fleetlines were CRG6 weren't they? Have I got this right? The grille and access flap certainly look like those of a rear transverse engine. Was the Roadliner so equipped? It seems perverse to provide a single-deck vehicle with an engine configuration that was undesirable from an engineering point of view, but necessary in double-deck vehicles for height-saving reasons. Bodywork was by Willowbrook. The vehicle was snapped at Northampton on Thursday 17th January 1980.

Palo Alto Fire Department responded to a two alarm fire at a residence on Loma Verde Ave following a fire that started in the rear garage/auto shop of a very crowded house. The resident was reluctant to leave feeling he had the situation under control, despite the rear of the premises being fully engulfed in flames. He was eventually rescued from the premises and transported to hospital. The fire had unusually large amounts of fuel both inside and outside the building, with neighboring houses very close to the structure there was a significant exposure threat.

In 2009 Palo Alto replaced 6 of their front line engines with new Pierce pumpers built on the Arrow XT chassis. Engines 1 through 6 are all new engines. The 7th engine based at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Fire Station is funded separately through federal dollars and wasn't replaced as part of this purchase.

The high performance 1.6 litre GTi Hatch was launched in 1984, instantly gaining cult status. For 1987 the model received a larger cylinder head and more power, quoted at 115bhp. Followed by a 1.9 litre version of 120bhp in 1986

The 1.6 GTi continued in production until 1994, outlasting the 1.9 version which ceased in 1993. Both version sold well, bouyed by their performance and the Gti handling became the benchmark for others to follow,

In its later years UK sales of the Gti and particularly the 1,9 litre version were adversly affected by spirraling insurance costs, particlarly among younger buyers who had become the models target buyer
