I love the look of Stampin’ Up’s embossing folders. Unfortunately, there is no similar product for My Digital Studio. I’m trying to create the same look with some tricks in the software. The bottom of this card is meant to look like I used the Stripes Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.

just for fun. I used the "embossed" function on the photo editor

I'm sure there are technicalities to whether the term "embossing" is really appropriate here, but in any case, this is a technique known in Japanese as karazuri. It's a particularly fine usage of the technique here, and I'm glad it came out.

Karazuri (空刷り) literally means "empty imprinting". A woodblock is carved with a pattern (in this case waves), and then, without inking it at all, the block is imprinted into the paper, leaving an inkless white-on-white embossed pattern.

This is most commonly seen in small areas, such as a section of white kimono sticking out from beneath other layers. But here it's seen across a large section of the composition.

Close up of seahorses card. I heat embossed the stamped image in silver on navy card. Then I stamped the image again in black on silvery grey organza. By placing the black seahorses on the organza (slighty to the right) over the silver embossed seahorses it gave this shadowy effect.

This is made for a stamping yahoo group swap ever since I've joined I have more confidence in stamping and heatset embossing. I was focusing on layering with hand stitching.

More details on my blog

I don't use machine stitch card due the thickness and don't want to break my sewing machine besides I love to stitch by hand even though it takes me 2 hours.

The good thing about swaps as open medium as long as there is stitching and is a relief from doing monthly challenges. As usually I use pre Distress Ink/stained paper scraps.

The wood block printed with no ink, but lots of pressure. I did a couple of these before I started covering the thing with ink again. Fabriano paper, 9" x 7".

Used HA snowman stamp and Creative Trees stamps. Used Cuttlebug to emboss background. Hard to tell from this pic, but the snowman is adhered with popdots so he is lifted off the card a bit.
