This metal beam was once the outer edge of the landfill of this jetty in Wolf Lake, but erosion has taken its toll and left the support standing in the water.

I was shooting photographs of the annual Run Thru History when I came across this. This is the embankment just outside Battlefield Inn in Vicksburg.

But, see if you can spot the civil war cannon.

Hint: Here is a closeup of the cannon.

Caltrain is up on an embankment for part of its route, 15 feet up and built at great expense, for the convenience of motorists who don't like to wait at train crossings.

Last week one car was going 79mph, didn't bother to stop at the T-intersection at the left of this photo, went up this embankment, and landed on the tracks, where it was immediately hit by a train.

Miraculously, nobody was hurt. Train service was messed up that morning, though.

Samual Plimsoll worked for security at see and he invented the Load Line (Plimsoll line).

A ship is allowed to load cargo only until th ship sinks down to the line. This is to insure there is enough free borad left over.

As with all photos taken on 3rd January 2008, this was hand-held due to the absence of my tripod. Thus it was almost miraculous that I managed sharp pictures at all....let alone vistas such as this.
