Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment, UN Environment through the Ozone Secretariat and United for Efficiency, and the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program have hosted a group of environmental experts, philanthropists, business leaders, international NGOs and government representatives to mark the adoption of the Amendment and strategies to ensure its long term success. The event took place on 28 January 2019 at the Marriott Hotel, Kigali. The event recognised the work Rwanda has done to meet its obligations under the Kigali Amendment. These efforts, which have been possible thanks to the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program and UN Environment's United for Efficiency, include conducting a market assessment, developing a national cooling strategy and minimum energy efficiency standards, and creating financial tools to support businesses to invest in efficient cooling.

The Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, UN Environment, UNDP and GIZ, convened the Africa Cooling Efficiency Conference in Kigali. The one-day event brought together approximately 70 cooling and energy efficiency stakeholders, decision makers and experts.

Building on his MSc in plant breeding, Evans’ PhD work is fully funded by GCP. “I love plants and I have a desire to provide and make available seeds to farmers, so I was motivated to work on developing improved crop varieties,” says Evans. “My father is a peasant farmer, and I worked the land with him. In Migori where I’m doing my fieldwork, farmers rely on traditional land races and local varieties. I have no doubt that improved seeds will improve lives by boosting yield. “ Evans is also a trainee in the Integrated Breeding Multiyear Course (IB–MYC). “It’s one of the best things that ever happened to me!” he enthuses. “The exposure has been amazing and will have great impact on my work, and that of others. The challenge for many African scientists is access to appropriate software and capacity to analyse data. Work gets done, but data lie unpublished, unshared and ‘un-analysed’.” Thanks to IB–MYC, Evans does not see this happening to him.
Earlier this year in March, Evans demonstrated IBP's Breeding Management System (BMS) to faculty staff and fellow students at the University of Eldoret. His demonstration was preceded by a BMS introduction by GCP's Capacity Building Leader, Ndeye Ndack Diop. See slides

Rwanda’s Business Development Fund (BDF), in partnership with the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA), UN Environment’s United for Efficiency initiative and the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE) have today launched the ‘Coolease’ financial mechanism to promote adoption of energy efficient and climate friendly cooling solutions in Rwanda.
The Coolease scheme is one of the first of its kind in Africa, and will enable suppliers and consumers of air conditioning and refrigerations products to transition to the latest technology without an upfront investment.
