For never, ever having jumped off of a dock before, Navarre exceeded my expectations at the Dock Diving competition this weekend. I have video, but it will take me a while to go through it. He loved it sooo much. He didn't like waiting in line for his turn though. The closer we got to the dock the whinier he got. He dragged me up the steps every time.
For Big Air, he received one first place medal, 3 2nd place medals and was 5th all around for amateur. I was so proud of him and all he saw it as was swimmin' and retrievin'. What really amazed me was his speed retrieve. I wasn't going to enter because he had never had a dokken in his mouth and that was what they had to grab at the end of the pool. And, it wasn't thrown in, it was hanging above the water. So, we practiced and by the 2nd time, he grabbed it and brought it back. He would have placed if he hadn't stopped at the edge of the dock and waited for me before jumping. But, he kicked it into high gear and brought the dokken back to me in 10 seconds. It was awesome. He never ceases to amaze me.
He is passed out right now and is very sore.
I think it’s kinda sad that our expectations on Mars have been lowered to the point that we are hoping to discover “whether there have ever been the right conditions on Mars to support microbial life”. As if discovering that microbes had once lived on Mars would finally answer the age-old question – “are we alone?”
See – when I grew up, the only question in our minds was whether Martians looked like us – or if they had antennae – like ‘My Favorite Martian’ on TV..
We assumed that there would be intelligent life virtually everywhere in the universe. And it may turn out that we were right – sort of. They’re probably everywhere – but very widely strewn.. There are hundreds upon hundreds of billions of stars – most of which will probably turn out to have multiple planets with at least one planet in the “Goldilocks Zone”.. Not too hot – not too cold – not too big – not too small.. Just right..
Even if only one in a billion stars has a planet in the Goldilocks Zone with intelligent life – that still means there are hundreds and hundreds of other civilizations out there wondering if they are alone. Probably scratching out a living out of the earth, same as us. But the odds of one of those civilizations being at the same point in their history as us really get astronomical. Imagine if they tried to make contact just a couple hundred years ago. What a ridiculous thought – aliens landing – and us trying to defend ourselves with muzzle-loading rifles and bows & arrows.. Or expecting them to bow before the king? Oh boy…

The fourth and final page of the short comic "Expectations" I did recently. The main subject has to do with one's expectations when having sex for the first time.
