These children's anthropomorphic gravestones provided Charles Dickens with the inspiration for poor Pip's dead brothers in his novel Great Expectations. In fact, they are to members of the wealthy Comport family, some of whom lived at Cooling Castle, today home of the television personality Jools Holland. The opening scene of Great Expectations, when Pip meets the convict Abel Magwitch, takes place in Cooling churchyard.
As I never saw my father or my mother, and never saw any likeness of either of them (for their days were long before the days of photographs), my first fancies regarding what they were like, were unreasonably derived from their tombstones. The shape of the letters on my father's, gave me an odd idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair. From the character and turn of the inscription, "Also Georgiana Wife of the Above," I drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled and sickly. To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged in a neat row beside their grave, and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine - who gave up trying to get a living, exceedingly early in that universal struggle - I am indebted for a belief I religiously entertained that they had all been born on their backs with their hands in their trousers-pockets, and had never taken them out in this state of existence."
Charles Dickens, Great Expectations, 1861

This is a photograph from the 4.5KM mark of the annual Na Fianna AC "Bob Heffernan and Mary Hanley" 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Johnstownbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday 16th May 2023 at 20:00.
This race needs no introductions as it is now firmly established on the Leinster road racing calendar with athletes travelling from all over the region to take part. The race has gained a glowing reputation as being one of the fastest 5KM road races in Ireland. It is one of the rare occasions around road racing circles these days where a very small club can organise a very successful large participation race. The attendance at this year's race exceeded all expectations. Today's race again recorded an attendance of over 700 participants following on from approximately the same numbers in 2022.

This race has great historical and emotional significance for the hosting club Na Fianna. Since the race's inception over 26 years ago it has commemorated the years of work and volunteering that local man Bob Heffernan gave to Meath, Leinster, and Irish athletics from grass roots upwards and his work with the host club Na Fianna AC. Last year the dearly departed Mary Hanley joined Bob Heffernan in receiving the honour of race co-dedication. Mary Hanley was a stalwart athlete, coach and volunteer for Na Fianna AC for her entire life right up to her untimely passing during the summer 2021. Mary and Bob gave a lifetime of dedication to the promotion of their club. Na Fianna AC are typical of many rural sporting clubs who have a large catchment area which combines rural North Kildare and South Meath taking in Enfield, Rathmoylan, Johnstownbridge and Baconstown. The race, known affectionately by club-members as simply "Bob's race" (and now Mary's) is a fitting tribute to commemorate their contributions to this sport. Indeed, not many road races are held in the same affection as this race with runners returning back every year to sample the course and the wonderful atmosphere again.
In addition to the fast course and competitive field, the weather was perfect for road racing. There was warm evening sunshine with hardly any wind.
The race is part of the Popup Races KIA Race Series. The race is a fixture on the Meath AAI Road Race calendar despite the fact that the race is run completely in County Kildare. The current route for the race has stayed the same over the past few years. However previous to that the race was held in Enfield and also Rathmoylan in County Meath. The race starts on the busy Enfield to Edenderry road and this requires a big effort from stewards and marshalls. However, as always, the event was a resounding success with personal bests and great runs from many of the participants. The course is very fast and flat - it is a one loop course which is left-handed in terms of turns.

I was not so keen on the Hot Toys AOU series figures as I have collected all the first Avengers figures and later the sequel turned out to be not up to my expectations but once I got one, the others follow and this one’s no exception. However, I still won’t get the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Ultron Mk I, and Iron Legion. That’s after I watch the movie I have lost my appetite on them. This is my third version of Hot Toys Black Widow variations and it is yet another nice one although at certain angles the face looks more like Natalie Portman.

oft light in Austacre Wood:
I went out on Friday to investigate the woodlands to the east of Lincoln of which there are many and to get to know my new Nikon Nikkor AI 35-70mm f/3.5 (1977-1981 serial number) manual focus lens.
Viewing the map and being in the field it becomes clear that the pockets of plantation and some old growth, were once part of one vast covering of forest at the edge of the fenland. Over time the forest has been cleared to make a way for agriculture leading to each wood having its own character.
The light was just right, overcast with some breaks in the cloud that allowed for soft light to filter through the trees. The delicate rim-lighting on the edge of this mossy trunk was one of the first things to catch my eye on my wander through Austacre Wood, my creative lilt being increasingly drawn to smaller details like this which almost tell more of a story of the light than the subject itself.
As for the lens, it exceeded all expectations. The clarity of the glass and the colour rendition exquisite. The long half-turn throw on the focus ring allowing one to be super, super precise of the position of focal point within the scene, great for a serial focus-stacker like me!

well, world, you have kept faith with me, kept faith with me
upon the whole you have proved to be much as you said you were
since as a child I used to lie upon the leaze and watch the sky
never, i own, expected i that life would all be fair
'twas then you said, and since have said, times since have said
in that mysterious voice you shed from clouds and hills around:
"many have loved me desperately, many with smooth serenity
while some have shown contempt of me
till they dropped underground
"i do not promise overmuch, child; overmuch -
just neutral-tinted haps and such"
you said to minds like mine
wise warning for your credit's sake!
which i for one failed not to take, and hence could stem such strain and ache
as each year might assign
he never expected much

NHS Values Summits bring together a diverse range of people and perspectives to foster greater understanding of how peoples' differences, social status and cultural expectations can affect their experiences of health and care.
Held on a quarterly basis across the country, each summit promotes values-based ways of working and explores a different theme relating to equality, health inequalities and human rights.
The theme of this NHS Values Summit, held on 18th September 2013, was entitled 'Making it happen in Greater Manchester: Integrated care across organisations'. Patient-centred care that is well co-ordinated across care settings and over time is better for all but can particularly benefit patients with long-term, chronic or complex conditions and those who may find it difficult to 'navigate' the health care system.
The Greater Manchester summit was held during National Recovery Month. This provided an opportunity for people to share their recovery stories with others and celebrate their successes, promoting the benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery for those experiencing mental health or substance misuse issues.
As a celebration of shared learning and partnership working, NHS England is pleased to welcome patients and the public, representatives from health and social care, and stakeholders from the private and voluntary/community sectors to these important events.

As a creative, I can't deny this feeling of pressure to always be producing and coming up with new work. Not to mention the tension of social media which forces us to push out new content just to stay visible.
Making art takes time.
I need space to accumulate an idea, time to work through it, and then try and make something valuable out of the process. It is usually not a fast procedure, and I don't think it should be.
So, in this instance, I don't really know if I'm the one bringing the weight on my shoulders by having all these expectations, or if is it a burden of this era that I'm trying to lift it away from myself.
