A three-phase 240V mains riser panel with meter (top left) and main distribution panel (possibly with fuses) bottom tight. Although there are some warm spots, nothing is getting particularly hot (just room temperature) so there's nothing to worry about. Nice colours, though.

Comments are warmly welcomed.

Early this year, we started noticing an awful smell in the living room, but we could never quite track down where it was coming from. Then in May, while I was out of town, Kate reported that there was no hot water. When I got back I concluded pretty quickly that the fault wasn't in the water heater but was somewhere in the power supply. Several breaker resets later, we had hot water ... and that horrid smell again, this time combined with smoke coming from a couple breakers.

An electrician was called.

A week later, there was a new breaker box in the apartment. This is the terminal strip of the old one. A return wire from one circuit had popped out of its breaker and was shorting to the bus seen here. The main breaker never tripped, but five of the breakers had holes burned clean through them.

I asked the electrician at one point how close we'd been to burning the house down. He said "not that close ..." but then he trailed off and simply shook his head. I take that to mean that we weren't that far either.

Word to the wise: if you ever put a multimeter on the supply to a 240V appliance and you don't see 240V between hot legs and 120V from each leg to ground (US and Canada residents only), call an electrician that minute.
