In the Lewis Warehouse, there are many examples of antique Ford Model T’s, Model A’s and several other US made iconic cars that are 70 to over 100 years old. Each of these warehouse vehicles are full originals that have been on the road within the last 15 years. Several of the old Fords have bird motifs on their model badges and in this case, the radiator cap is clearly a quail.
Researching this… it turns out that Henry Ford was an avid birder! And it was his idea to decorate the radiator caps with a quail – the idea here being that this car will burst off from a full stop like a quail when it is flushed from low grass. In 1927, George Stant, in his 1898 founded Michigan firm, designed this cap as part of the car’s coolant system for Henry Ford.
More research… one can purchase an excellent chrome replica of this cap for say $150 from eBay, however a real cap in just “good” condition, if you can find one, is valued at about ten times this amount.
Final point, today in 2024, Stant is a US owned and HQ based company, with offices and plants around the world, "a recognized world leader in the design and manufacturing of mechanical vapor management systems, fuel delivery systems, thermal management systems and engineering services.”

Distinctive gull endemic to Galápagos. Adult is easy to identify by sooty-gray body, black head, white crescents above and below eye, and pale rump. Juvenile is grayish brown with tan scaling on the back and wings, and a pale rump. Found along the coast, almost never venturing inland or very far out to sea. Forages along beaches and rocky shorelines, and often perches on boats and docks. It has the smallest population of any gull in the world, estimated at less than 1000 birds. (eBird)

Piercing calls and distinctive wing markings make the otherwise subdued Willet one of our most conspicuous large shorebirds. Whether in mottled brown breeding plumage or gray winter colors, Willets in flight reveal a bold white and black stripe running the length of each wing. These long-legged, straight-billed shorebirds feed along beaches, mudflats, and rocky shores. Willets are common on most of our coastline—learn to recognize them and they’ll make a useful stepping-stone to identifying other shorebirds.
Distinctive large shorebird with a long, thin upturned bill and lean neck. Bold black-and-white wings prominent year-round. Birds in winter have no buffy-orange wash on head. Frequents wetlands where it swings its head back-and-forth in shallow water to catch small invertebrates.

The house martin is a small bird with glossy blue-black upper parts and pure white under parts. It has a distinctive white rump with a forked tail and, on close inspection, white feathers covering its legs and toes. It spends much of its time on the wing collecting insect prey. The bird's mud nest is usually sited below the eaves of buildings. They are summer migrants and spend their winters in Africa. Although still numerous and widespread, recent moderate declines earn them a place on the Amber List.

Mourning dove,
A symbol of the Holy Spirit,
A symbol of Peace,
A symbol of Hope,
By virtue of their melancholy call, mourning doves have been fittingly named. Their distinctive “wooo-oo-oo-oo” sounds may evoke a feeling of grief over the loss of a dearly beloved.
But far from representing death, the symbolism of mourning doves gives us optimism with its spirituality. Beyond their sorrowful song is a message of life, hope, renewal and peace.

Not quite a Yves Klein IKB 79 (IKB stands for International Klein Blue) a distinctive ultramarine which Klein registered as a trademark colour in 1957. He considered that this colour had a quality close to pure space and he associated it with immaterial values beyond what can be seen or touched. IKB 79 was one of nearly two hundred blue monochrome paintings Yves Klein made during his short life.
Here's IKB 79 which hangs in the Tate Gallery

Yves Klein (28 April 1928 – 6 June 1962) was a French artist considered an important figure in post-war European art. He is the leading member of the French artistic movement of Nouveau réalisme founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany. Klein was a pioneer in the development of performance art, and is seen as an inspiration to, and as a forerunner of, minimal art, as well as pop art.

These distinctive mushrooms pop up on lawns and in parks or wherever the grass gets mowed short in autumn, usually following the first few cold spells. Picked while they're still in the cylindrical popsicle stage, they remind me of smoked pork chops when sautéed to a crisp. The one on the right is still young enough to eat, while the left shaggy mane is starting to open its tight skirt and blacken around the bottom. At that point, it will probably fall apart prior to being prepared. Shaggy manes soon dissolve into a disgusting black goo if left alone.
Just a couple of hundred yards from the great stupa and bell lies the beautiful white Hsinbyume or Myatheindan Pagoda with a distinctive architectural style modelled after the mythical Mount Meru (Myinmo taung), built in 1816 by Bodawpaya's grandson and successor Bagyidaw and dedicated to the memory of his first consort Princess Hsinbyume (Lady of the White Elephant, granddaughter of Bodawpaya, 1789–1812) who died in childbirth
The distinctive lines of a giant clam contrast with the purple algae surrounding it. The intricate lines in the soft mantle tissue of the clam are caused by endosymbiotic algae--the clam and algae are in a mutualism, or mutually beneficial relationship. The clam is filter feeding--the incurrent siphon is the elliptical hole to the left of the center, and the more frilly siphon to the right of center is the excurrent siphon. So giant clams, like reef building corals, gain energy by both filter feeding and the photosynthesis of its algae.

Named after the distinctive white band at the base of bill. Medium size, grayish-brown goose, with irregular black barring on underparts; orange feet and legs. Bill distinctive orange in Greenland form with whitish tip. Most young birds acquire white front and bill during first Winter; acquire black belly markings by second Fall. Color and size vary in adults: small, pale arctic tundra birds have heavy barring; taiga breeding birds are larger, darker with less barrings. Greenland form has heaviest barrings. Casual and increasing Winter visitor on East coast from Quebec to Georgia, although the goose is very uncommon east of the Mississippi River.

Penhill is a distinctively shaped hill overlooking the market town of Leyburn in Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
Penhill is sometimes referred to as "Penhill Hill", and since "Pen" is an ancient word for "hill" Penhill Hill could be considered a hill which has been named three times over!
It is a number of years since we climbed Penhill, but the views from the top are outstanding

Rutland - Distinctive large, graceful raptor with a fairly long, forked, rusty-orange tail. Flies with easy languid wingbeats and lazy glides, circling gracefully over fields and roadsides. Can be confused with Black Kite; note overall more reddish coloration, paler face, larger white patches on the underwings, and more deeply forked tail. Inhabits varied semiopen habitats, from woodland to farmland and moorland with hedges and wooded patches; locally in urban areas. Often scavenges with crows.
After diving for fish, emerges from water and shakes plumage vigorously by twisting body in flight, head to tail; distinctive behavior.
Distinctive and charismatic little bird with a bright orangey face and breast (easily hidden when facing away).Found in a wide range of wooded habitats, including forests, gardens, hedges in farmland, and heathland, usually fairly near cover. Hops perkily on the ground, pausing to look around, often flicking its wings and cocking its tail. Also feeds by dropping to the ground from low perches, snatching up prey and flying back up to a shady perch.

The rich color, distinctive iconography and beauty of the interior of an Orthodox Church generally are in sharp contrast to the simplicity which one finds in many Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. When one enters the interior of the Orthodox church it is like stepping into a whole new world of color and light. The art and design of the church not only create a distinctive atmosphere of worship, but they also reflect and embody many of the fundamental insights of Orthodoxy
Rising mist in autumn on the estate Slangenburg. Distinctive trees dominate the open field, with in the background a forest edge. The beautiful cloudy sky makes the rustic atmosphere complete. A bit later, the sky completely closed in fog and stayed the whole morning.

Very distinctive manakin found in lush cloud forest in western Ecuador and western Colombia.
This was one of a couple of birds seen while we were at the Long-wattled Umbrellabird lek about 90 minutes drive NW of Mindo (Pichincha/Ecuador). This species has a very unique "dance" (more posturing than dancing) as well as emitting a strange clicking sound.

Distinctive honeyeater found in coastal heath and gardens. Underparts white with black streaking. Back, wings, and head black with yellow panels on tail and wings. Distinguished from the similar White-cheeked Honeyeater by presence of two smaller white patches on side of face, rather than one large patch. Feeds mostly on nectar but supplements its diet with insects. Often found near flowering Banksia.
A school bus is any type of bus owned, leased, contracted to, or operated by a school or school district. It is regularly used to transport students to and from school or school-related activities, but not including a charter bus or transit bus.[1] Various configurations of school buses are used worldwide; the most iconic examples are the yellow school buses of the United States which are also found in other parts of the world.
In North America, school buses are purpose-built vehicles distinguished from other types of buses by design characteristics mandated by federal and state/provincial regulations. In addition to their distinct paint color (National School Bus Glossy Yellow), school buses are fitted with exterior warning lights (to give them traffic priority) and multiple safety devices.[2]

A cypress knee is a distinctive structure forming above the roots of a cypress tree of any of various species of the subfamily Taxodioideae. Their function is unknown, but they are generally seen on trees growing in swamps. Some current hypotheses present that they might help to aerate to the tree's roots, create a barrier to catch sediment and reduce erosion, assist in anchoring the tree in the soft and muddy soil, or any combination thereof.
Knees are woody projections sent above the normal water level, roughly vertically from the roots, with a near-right-angle bend taking them vertically upward through water. One early assumption of their function was that they provided oxygen to the roots that grow in the low dissolved oxygen (DO) waters typical of a swamp, acting as pneumatophores: mangroves have similar adaptations. There is little actual evidence for this assertion; in fact, swamp-dwelling specimens whose knees are removed continue to thrive, and laboratory tests demonstrate that the knees are not effective at depleting oxygen in a sealed chamber. Even though there is no expert consensus on their role, the supposition that they are pneumatophores is repeated without note in several introductory botany textbooks.
Another more likely function is that of structural buttressed support and stabilization. Lowland or swamp-grown cypresses found in flooded or flood-prone areas tend to be buttressed and "kneed," as opposed to cypresses grown on higher ground, which may grow with very little taper.

Distinctive toucan of montane forests in the Andes from Venezuela to extreme northwest Peru. Easy to identify with black cap, dark bill, white throat, powder blue belly, and mostly brownish upperparts. Occurs from 1,500-2,500m, typically below the elevational range of Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan but occasionally some overlap. Uncommon; usually found singly or in pairs in the forest canopy, often around fruiting trees.

Breeding males are beautiful and distinctive with rich reddish-brown head, buffy forehead, pearly gray body, and pinkish breast. Look for large white wing patches in flight. Females are plainer warm brown overall, with a small pale bill. Very difficult to distinguish from female American Wigeon; note warmer brown head on Eurasian with little contrast between head, breast, and sides. Also look for dirty grayish, not bright white, underwings in flight, but this can be difficult to judge, especially at a distance. Widespread and common in Eurasia, breeding at northern latitudes and wintering south to central Africa and Southeast Asia. Typically in flocks on lakes and wetlands, often grazing in nearby fields. Regular winter visitor to North America, especially on the west coast, usually in very small numbers among flocks of American Wigeon.
