SOINTULA is an isolated village on Malcolm Island in British Columbia, Canada. Lying between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland, northeast of Port McNeill and not far from Alert Bay, the island is part of the historic and present territory of the ‘Namgis First Nation.

SOINTULA history is one of hard work and Utopioan ideals. Sointula began as the desire of a group of Finnish immigrants working in the Nanaimo area coal mines at the beginning of the 1900’s for a self-sustaining place of their own. The group contacted Matti Kurikka, political philosopher and journalist, to provide leadership. He arrived in Nanaimo in 1900. The Finns founded the Kalevan Kansa Colonization Company, “Aika” newspaper and negotiated with the British Columbia government for land. Kurikka’s friend, A. B. Makela, arrived from Finland to help in the effort. In 1901 formal arrangements were completed and the Kalevan Kansa was ready to take possession of Malcolm Island – all 28,000 acres of it. The first work party arrived on December 15, 1901 and began to clear the land. In June 1902 the growing commune was joined by a large group of families and individuals for a Juhannus Celebration. During those meetings, Sointula, Place of Harmony, was formally chosen as the name for this new utopia. The community continued to grow. Many of the newcomers were attracted by Kurikka’s ideas: communal ownership, decision making by consensus, equal pay for women and a separate children’s home. By 1903, they had succeeded in completing a large communal building. Link to the rest of the article - sointulamuseum.ca/history/

SOINTULA, the site of an experimental Finnish Communist Commune in the early 20th Century. While the utopian community ultimately failed, many of the immigrants stayed and Malcolm Island still has a large population of people of Finnish extraction.

I am surprised that the late Leonard Knight has not been featured in Architectural Digest magazine. Of course, most of his work was rather unique and controversial.

Poor old Papin had indigestion so he worked out a way to solve the problem! Apply some heat, create some pressure, and “Hey presto” problem solved?? Well, it’s as good a way to start the week as any. What was Mr. Papin’s digester for, and did it solve his problem?

Maybach Excelero,a luxury car produced by Maybach in 2005,a two-seat super car powered by a V12 engine. The engine is from Maybach 57 S,another great german car.The Maybach Excelero wasn’t launched for sale. The company manufactured only one, so we can say it’s a prototype. Equiped with a twin-turbo 5,9 liter V12 engine, generating over 700 HP. Now that’s real power. As for the design, it is kind of special. Many opinions said it was good for a BatMobil, because of it’s bodykit. The only original Maybach component is the front grid. The interior is all black and red leather and carbon fiber. This car has only two seats, so we can say it’s a sport car. But this one is unique. The whole Excelero was hand built and the price for it was set to $8.000.000 . Not anyone could buy this one. so much about Maybach Excelero, the $8.000.000 super car with a monster power. For those money you can buy a lot of Lamborghinis.

I had been wanting to do something like this for a while.

I used to be a really big reader but I haven't read much in a while. I'll start reading more at some point.

Coffee and the new edition of Fatboys Digest. A good way to start the weekend!

About a 4 second shutter speed on my 20D shooting tach on friends Acura Integra.

Taken in a parking garage with no extra lighting.

Carnac - the friendly driver is waiting for tourists to take them on a ride to admire old stones (menhires). Maybe I don't do justice to one of the main historic places in Brittany, but the public toilets there don't do it either :)

.

Thanks for visits and faves. Written comments highly appreciated and will be responded a.s.a.p :)

Cheers
