42101 waits in the loop, while the passengers take in the view from the time honoured lookout. 13th October, 2016.

Summit Tank was, in the days of steam, quite a busy yard. Steam locomotives, upon completing the ascent of the steep grade from Unanderra, would need to take water for the next legs of the trip to Robertson and Moss Vale. This water came from a dam between here and Mount Murray, about 4Km down from the latter. That dam still survives, but any surviving traces of the pipe that bore the water down to the tank and column was finally obliterated in a major perway upgrade some decades ago.

Banking locomotives, that had assisted trains up the 1 in 30 from Unanderra, could be serviced and turned on a 60ft turntable, to provide braking assistance down the Mountain to the coast.

While passenger trains were being serviced, the passengers would amble along a path to a nearby lookout to admire the view to the Illawarra Coast from this high vantage point east of the Macquarie Pass. The passengers of 3801 Limited's Cockatoo Run, which is the only regular passenger service to travel this way, are still invited to enjoy the view as the train will usually stop in the loop at Summit Tank. In this picture, some passengers can be seen returning to the train from the lookout.

Now, all that is left is a small platform, a decent crossing loop and a local control panel and radio antenna for train operations.

Diesel-powered NS DM 90 with fleetnumber 3432 on its way from Enschedé to Zwolle and approaching Raalte here just before crossing the Overijsselsch Kanaal.

Since December 2017 this line is operated by Keolis and these DM 90 diesel trains are withdrawn from the service. Keolis operates the line by electric trains of the type Flirt built by Stadler.

NS DM 90

The NS Class 3400 diesel multiple units were built by Duewag, Talbot and SIG between 1996 and 1998. They operate in the Netherlands. They are operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and some were on loan to Syntus. The class is referred to as DM'90 or Buffel by the Dutch, which means Buffalo. Class 3400 are now the only DMUs in service with the NS, the older DE3 ("Plan U") and DH1/2 ("Wadloper") series having been replaced by the diesel electric Stadler GTW. DM'90 is short for Dieselmaterieel 90, meaning Diesel rolling stock from the 1990s.

In 1993, NS ordered 53 units of the class from Talbot, now Bombardier. The electrical systems, train controls, and diagnostic systems were delivered by Holec Ridderkerk, now Alstom. Duewag installed the interiors of the trains in Krefeld, after which the units were transferred to the Netherlands. Unit 3401 was delivered on March 12, 1996, and the last unit, 3453, was brought into service in 1998.

The rolling stock was introduced in the end of the 1990s on a large portion of the non-electrified lines in the Netherlands. In the period thereafter many of these routes were transferred to private sector operators, Syntus and several other operators used the sets for their services, others were temporarily used on electrified sectors for local services.

In December 2017, almost all trainsets were sold to the Romanian FeroTrans. On 10 December, all remaining trains intended for Romania in Nijmegen were drawn up.
