This is a plant that I obtained from Wilbur Chang of Kaneohe, Hawaii. The plant is grown in a 3-1/2 inch plastic pot with New Zealand sphagnum moss as the media. The plant growth looks similar to Ddc. filiforme but the flowers are not like filiforme.

Note that the correct name of the plant is Dendrochilum formosanum.

The theme for the 2018 Exposition (the 66th) was “Curiouser and Curiouser, Orchids in Wonderland.” The theme plays off the story of “Alice in Wonderland,” and the Mad Hatter Tea Party was the theme for the Gala.

Dendrochilum wenzelii Ames 1915 SECTION Acoridium [Nees & Meyen] Pfitzer & Kranzlin

Acoridium wenzelii (Ames) Ames 1922

The largest of the genus, related to Coelogyne. I've found this species to be a very easy grower. Nice scent of vanilla, but with a bit of soapiness.

Blooms are presented well, in a slightly twisting pendulous raceme. But you really have to get in there before the blooms start looking like orchid flowers! From the side, the individual blooms, hidden under their cowl-like floral bracts, look like hermit crabs.

Each flower has a natural spread of about 1.3cm, and spikes I counted varied from about 82 to 112 blooms each. With 24 spikes this year, by the time they're all bloomed out, this plant will have produced approximately 2300 blooms in this year's blooming. Currently in a 12" pot.

Dendrochilum rhombophorum? - Cindy Hill

According to Jeff Wood in his book Dendrochillum of Borneo this is an interesting species which is known only from a few collections from the Long Pasia area of Sipitang District, Sabah. It is found in "low and open mossy ridge forest with a dense undergrowth of bamboo and rattan palms at around 1700 metres." This is exactly where we were. The mossy ridge (our name for this area) of Mt Rimau at about 1700 metres. A great find of a species which does not seem to be in cultivation.
