These demolished and abandoned buildings are part of the aftermath of Christchurch earthquake.

Southbound BNSF Train passes by the former, abandoned Gates Rubber Plant in Denver, Colorado. This rickety old factory is being torn down. An eyesore for some people, or a gorgeous subject for HDR photographers, I'm going to miss this beautiful backdrop for railfanning.

Charles Cassius Gates, Jr. (May 27, 1921-August 28, 2005) was a businessman and philanthropist. His father, Charles Gates Sr., bought Colorado Tire & Leather for $3,500 in 1911. The company was renamed The Gates Rubber Company in 1919. It became world's largest non-tire rubber manufacturer. Charles Gates Jr. took over in 1961, upon the death of his father. The Gates Corporation continued to grow, diversify, and acquire other companies, including Learjet. By 1996, the privately held Gates Corporation employed over 14,000 people. It was sold to London-based Tomkins that year for US$1.1 billion.

Charles C. Gates, Jr. was trustee emeritus of the Gates Family Foundation, a large, Colorado-based charitable organization that has distributed over $147 million dollars in grants over its 60-year history. He also sat on the boards of many other organizations, including the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, home to Gates Planetarium.

Demolished in 2016

Edgewater, NJ. It's been demolished.

Built in 1931, this complex of sandstone-clad Art Deco-style buildings at the edge of Amherst, Ohio were designed by architect Frank Wooster Bail and constructed to house terminally ill tuberculosis patients in Lorain County, utilizing easy access to fresh air and ample natural light to help alleviate their symptoms, and being constructed with beautiful details and a warm-colored stone exterior. Following the advent of effective cures for tuberculosis, the building fell out of use for housing people afflicted with the disease, and became a nursing home in 1967, replacing the old Lorain County Home, with a major renovation and addition being carried out on the building in 1979. In 2015, owing to a lack of funding, the nursing home was closed, and the building has since sat vacant, with a proposal to convert it into an addiction treatment center being rejected by Lorain County voters in 2017. The building, as of Spring 2022, was being offered for sale to developers, and was undergoing asbestos abatement at the time. By November 2022, the building had been demolished.

Crematorium II

The Crematorium II building, which contained a gas chamber and furnaces for burning corpses. Several hundred thousand Jewish men, women and children were murdered here with poison gas, and their bodies burned. The bodies of Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners who died in the concentration camp were also burned here. According to calculations by the German authorities, 1,440 corpses could be burned in this crematorium every 24 hours. According to the testimony of former prisoners, the figure was higher.

The gas chamber and Crematorium II functioned from March 1943 through November 1944.

At the end of the war, in connection with the operation intended to remove the evidence of their crimes, the camp authorities ordered the demolition of the furnaces and crematorium building in November 1944. On January 20, 1945, the SS blew up whatever had not been removed.

Birkenau was the largest of the more than 40 camps and sub-camps that made up the Auschwitz complex. During its three years of operation, it had a range of functions. When construction began in October 1941, it was supposed to be a camp for 125 thousand prisoners of war. It opened as a branch of Auschwitz in March 1942, and served at the same time as a center for the extermination of the Jews. In its final phase, from 1944, it also became a place where prisoners were concentrated before being transferred to labor in German industry in the depths of the Third Reich.

The majority—probably about 90%—of the victims of Auschwitz Concentration Camp died in Birkenau. This means approximately a million people. The majority, more than nine out of every ten, were Jews. A large proportion of the more than 70 thousand Poles who died or were killed in the Auschwitz complex perished in Birkenau. So did approximately 20 thousand Roma and Sinti, in addition to Soviet POWs and prisoners of other nationalities.
