Rock City officially opened as a public attraction on May 21, 1932. It got off to a slow start because advertising in those days was difficult, especially since Garnet & Frieda Carter’s mountain-top attraction was not located in a place that people would just happen to be passing by and take notice. It was at this point another brilliant idea of Garnet Carter’s was born. In 1936, he enlisted the help of a young sign painter named Clark Byers, who was hired to travel the nation’s highways and offer to paint a farmer’s barns in exchange for letting him paint three simple words: See Rock City. The distinctive black-and-white signs appeared as far north as Michigan, as far west as Texas, and as far south as Florida. The advertising soon began to produce the desired effect and by the 1950's, Garnet's message was painted on over 900 barns. Journalists began calling Clark and his helpers the "Barnyard Rembrandts", and vacationers by the millions have heeded the call to "SEE ROCK CITY".

Garnet's innovative spirit and Clark's hard work are still evident along many U.S. highways (not particularly the interstate system but the old highway system) and are much loved pieces of Americana. This one in particular is located about 30 miles southwest of Rock City and reads "35 Miles to Beautiful Rock City". It is also the barn that has a similar message on the opposite side of the roof that reads "Sequoyah Caverns" making it one of the more unique advertising barns I've ever photographed. Having one 'attraction' on one side of the roof and a completely different 'attraction' on the other side is about as interesting as you can find in one of these old advertising barns. (See the image below in the comments for the other side.)

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Scott has been developing an idea for a composite shot for a while now and today was the day that everything lined up and we all got out there to help make the vision a reality.

Jo was a trooper through it too; it actually started snowing while we were working on setting up and while we gave her the chance to flee, she stuck to it, dress and all!

I figured the work might make for an interesting "behind the scenes" composite and brought my gear along.

Thanks to Scott for showing me a few Photoshop tricks to help me process too!

Yay team work!

Hope everyone has had a good day.

“The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.

Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.

You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us. The bounds of creativity extend far beyond the limits of a canvas or a sheet of paper and do not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter.”

~Dieter F. Uchtdorf

I created these tissue paper flowers. I know they may not be the “best” but, I created them and for that I am grateful.

"Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." George Bernard Shaw.

In the mid-twelfth century, the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland led by King Henry II of England marked the arrival of numerous English nobles to Irish lands. One of those nobles, was Richard Talbot, who received from the sovereign the area of Malahide. To control their new lands, the Talbot family built a castle, which was modified over time and served as a family residence for almost 800 years. In 1975 the castle was finally sold to the Irish State. Thanks to this, we are currently lucky enough to visit it with a guided tour, in which its interesting history is explained while we contemplate its beautiful interior, as well as being able to walk quietly through its lovely gardens.

As I often do, I organized the visit to later photograph the castle at the blue hour. The sky was really dramatic that night, but finding an interesting composition was not easy and the lights of the castle were not the best. Even so, with a little magic in the post-processing I have been able to achieve a result that leaves me satisfied.

As night fell and I waited to capture more light on the scene, my wife and I danced to the music of a concert that was taking place in the immediate vicinity of the Castle. It was our second anniversary as a couple and together we created a magical moment that we will never forget.
