Gaslight Square, a lively hub for night life and entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s, appears on the rise again. But this time, you won't find the fabled Three Fountains restaurant or Barbra Streisand, Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen packing them in at the Crystal Palace restaurant and nightclub. (text: St. Louis Post-Dispatch article)
With apologies to the late Miles Davis, Gaslight Square was "the birth of the cool" for many St. Louisans.
In the first half of the 1960s, this neighborhood at the intersection of Olive Street and Boyle Avenue in the city's Central West End was the place to be and be seen for artists, comedians and musicians of all types. Bob Dylan ... Judy Collins [and] the Smothers Brothers are only the most famous among the hundreds of performers who were part of Gaslight Square's early history.
In the second half of the decade, the crowds became younger and the entertainment racier. Residents fled as the newspapers published sensationalized reports of crime in the neighborhood. Gradually, the streets fell silent. The last businesses left in the early 1970s, and the neighborhood fell to ruin. (text: St. Louis Post-Dispatch article)
There is now new construction going on -- houses and condos. As pictured above.
Interesting photos from the heyday of Gaslight Square can be seen here (click on the thumbnails at the bottom of the page)
Photos of the the deterioration of the buildings can be seen here.
More photos and history can be seen here, on the wildly interesting Built St. Louis web site.

The Community Profile Show goes hairy! “I kept the beard and that’s where I met you. You said you liked my beard and I said I like yours too” sing the Beards.
The ZoneOneRadio team went to the Movember ‘Kick Off’meeting located and spoke to Men's Cancer charity Orchid.
in a pub in central London. They had a look at some great beards as well as a chat with Mo sisters and bro’s about the men’s health support campaign.

One of the Movember meeting organizers, who is female thinks that whilst women talk about health issues often, men rarely see the point. That is why it is important to be aware of their issues and raise money for the foundations to help them deal with it.
As the supporters said, growing a beard is a good fun and also a great way to express your support for men’s health.
Movember helps Prostate Cancer UK, The Institute of Cancer Research and Movember General Foundation.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) are record level patient data collected by the Department of Health from every NHS hospital in England and Wales. HES data provides a comprehensive picture of inpatient care that can support public health analysis, planning and resource allocation, benchmarking, clinical audit, monitoring and performance management and research.* Presenting HES data using InstantAtlas makes the data more accessible. As Steve Morgan, Senior Public Health Analyst at SEPHO says: " “I’ve demonstrated the software to a number of senior public health specialists and received a great deal of positive feedback – complex data previously once displayed in tedious two dimensional spreadsheets and charts is now transformed in an exciting and more meaningful manner.
The new HES e-Atlas produced by SEPHO on behalf of APHO shows HES data from 2003/4 by Local Authority.

Every week Delores William and Sheila Smith talk to people making a difference in London on ZoneOneRadio.
This week they look at food banks, food poverty, and food recycling.
Download from iTunes or listen on demand.
The number of people using food banks tripled in the last year, and this week Dolores talks to Ray Woolford of We Care Food Bank in Deptford and listens to the story of a woman who makes use of the food bank for herself and her daughter.
Dolores teaches us how to make a delicious pumpkin pie that she and Sheila enjoy! Find the recipe at ift.tt/16sv1xz.
Interns Katherine and Emilia go to Bromley-by-Bow to visit the Pie in the Sky Cafe run by the non-profit Food Cycle and see how the cafe reduces food waste.
And, of course, Sheila and Dolores give us this week's round up of community news.
Music this week with a food theme from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Beatles.
