Martin, assistant crowd control instructors with 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, simulate a riot for the Burkina Faso partners they are training with during Exercise Western Accord 2012. The crowd control training taught the basics of baton work, use of shields, forming a shield line, keeping rhythm in the line, and the deployment of “snatch teams” that are used to acquire and detain high-value individuals, such as a riot leader. Exercise Western Accord 2012 is a multi-lateral training exercise with West African nations to increase understanding and interoperability, prevent conflict by enabling Africans to provide for their security and stability, strengthen relationships with partner nations, and promote and support U.S. national security priorities. Participating African nations include Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Gambia.

BABADAG TRAINING AREA, Romania -- During a final exercise in peacekeeping operations, U.S. Marines of Black Sea Rotational Force 11, dressed in padded, police-training suits, crash into the shields of Romanian Marines trying to keep order in a mock village of “rioters.” Romanian and U.S. Marines trained in Babadag Training Area for a two-week course in counterinsurgency and peacekeeping operations including combat marksmanship, convoy operations, Improvised-Explosive Device (IED) awareness, and Marine Corps Martial Arts.

Private Jason Edwardson treating a casualty.The Combat Medics from Fire Support, 1 R WELSH treating 2 category C casualties at Check Point Bennett. After immediate first aid treatment in the field, the casualties were brought in from a contact with the Taleban less than 15 minute before. Eight Taleban had attacked the patrol, the second attack that afternoon. Captain Frankie Taylor, 2ic Fire Support Company reports a "9-liner" casevac report to HQ and requests a casevac by helicopter. Both Afghan security force casualties were helicopter lifted back to Bastion although both were walking wounded; one had suffered gunshot wounds to his foot and the other had incurred shrapnel wounds to his right arm and leg.
