The tree squirrel – This animal along with the white tailed deer are two studies of contrasts that are difficult to explain. Looking at their development and adaptation to their environment, few other species can show equal abilities for survival. Squirrels vs bird feeders will always demonstrate that the squirrel will find a way to get around any human invention that is designed to keep them off the feeders. Any victory by humans will prove temporary as the draw of food creates mental ability far beyond existing capabilities. The same can be said about the deer population in this country. Feed a deer all year long so they are conditioned to return to the same location every day for food and a hunter has created a sure “kill” on opening day. Get up well before sunup, face the cold weather, climb into a deer stand, cover yourself in deer scent, and do not move or make a sound. We all know that the deer will not come to that location on opening day, or any other day of hunting season. As soon as the season closes, they return for food.

Here is the paradox – Put a paved road anywhere near these two animals and all adaptation is gone. Instinct, intellect and sanity have no influence on what they will do when confronted with a moving vehicle at the same time they want to cross the road.

I have read that a good portion of the stimulus money has been set aside to study this problem in the name of fixing global warming and energy consumption improvements. The program has been given the name CFCA. Pronounced CIF-CA, it stands for “Cash for clunker animals”. Bring in the remains of any squirrel or deer that has been killed by a vehicle on the highway and you will be compensated . The list used to include opossums as well. However, too many were waking up and walking away after they were paid for. An effort at tagging those already purchased proved that some were being turned in repeatedly. A decision was made that it would be inappropriate to call them clunkers. The IRS and TSA have both been asked to keep records of the “clunkers” to see if trends can be determined. Dragging the remains through a body scanner or metal detector has not helped. Using the extensive investigative arm of the IRS has provided several new “social programs” to be funded and BP Petroleum has been required to pay for the studies. Both agencies are hiring more employees to fill the needs of a demanding public.

Advertising agencies have followed the study with a great deal of interest. The term they use for what happens inside the mind of these animals is “Conative dissonance”. It is the feeling of discomfort when simultaneously holding two or more conflicting cognitions, ideas, beliefs, values, or emotional reactions. In a state of dissonance, a squirrel will run past a car and then turn around and run back into the path of the tires. A deer will freeze and wait to be hit. People, it has been determined, feel “disequilibrium”, frustration, hunger, dread, guilt, anger, embarrassment, anxiety, or other uncomfortable reactions. Such a condition will cause most people to “spend money”. Next time you have exercised caution at the grocery store and purchased healthy foods and then are confronted with sugar sodas, candy by the register, and cheese crackers, picture yourself as the squirrel that has just turned around and run into the path of the oncoming car! How many times has the cashier said, “do you want me to put this in a bag, or do you want to carry it out in your hand?”

One last comment, if you are feeling uncomfortable about now, eat a candy bar, stop reading, look at other pictures, or ignore this posting and you will feel better.

SSIR Technology, Cognition and Behavior

So after a year of making mistake after mistake, (still making mistakes) I am finally coming full circle to the wisdom I was first given by Dave Jacke at a workshop last September. At the time, all I wanted to do was get out there and do the work! I designed as I went and tried experiment after experiment; from building a raised bed garden 72 feet long to digging the earth and causing erosion (more on that in a second).

The old adage, "school of the hardknocks" seems to be what I personally need to reach that "A ha!" moment where I realize how stupid I was in making all of these hasty decisions. So, I've been doing this long before I started to garden, and even when I considered myself a graphic DESIGNER. You can read all of these ideas and provisions out of a book, but I find they stay in the book until I realize why the authors wrote those things in there in the first place.

So as I examine the mistakes I've made I find myself feeling, in my physiology, the change that was needed to think from a designers perspective. Now I'm not saying experimenting is not designing, but I mean designing in the sense that before the shovel hits the sod, the ideas are written on paper and mulled over, refined, erased, and improved upon. Designing with intent.

As I look at the eroded soil, the scars of my decisions made a year ago, I think to myself, "This can be fixed, and after that it can thrive." Working with water one will often underestimate it's power; even the smallest, most gentle flows, can and WILL cause erosion. Using this design process (or whatever process one feels appropriate) I can step out of my mind where I am critiquing and judging things I did, to an existential point where I am here to heal the issue, not ramble on about how it's not working or how much of a failure I am for making the mistake. And, because our culture seems to facilitate the latter form of cognition, the design process can act as a spiritual and mental tool to assess one's own internal erosion and learn to dig metaphorical swales where the (pain body as eckhart tolle calls it) negative thoughts can infiltrate into my subconscious, transmuting them into my true self, the non-judgemental being within. And from that point, I can draw from this reserve of transmuted negative energy, much like the plants in a swale draw from the water stored in the sub-soil. All of this thanks to a design process.

So, I recommend to all those reading this, save yourself the time and struggle of mistake after mistake, or an action-reaction cognition, and refer to this basic set of guidelines and pathways which can and will facilitate positive action in the "real" world and that within... Or there's always the school of hardknocks, which in time will bring about similar revelations.

Tricks of the Mind | March 2013TRICKS OF THE MIND - March 2013

If you can't view this email, please click here.

Hi,

A question we're often asked is what is Mind Magic? Mind Magic is using magic (of the conjuring variety) to create the illusion that you can read minds, influence people and demonstrate paranormal & extraordinary powers, e.g. ESP, moving objects with the power of your mind and predicting the future.

It is sometimes called mentalism, although we use the term Psychological Artistry, and has been shown to be popular in the programmes of Derren Brown and other magicians. The workshops we run not only reveal these often guarded tricks and secrets, but merge them with psychology and neuroscience so that we can use and apply these approaches in therapy, coaching, business etc. For more information on these workshops, please see mindsways.com/SMS/

All of our workshops, Sleight of Mind Set and The Fascination all use Mind Magic tricks, tools and techniques and Psychological Artistry. There is one overriding theme within them all; that is the Show Not Tell principle. The Show Not Tell principle is all about making people experience and feel the message rather than just be told. The Show Not Tell principle is about engaging through emotions, not just logic and reasoning. The intellect finds the logic to justify what the emotions have decided.

To see more information about The Fascination, please see mindsways.com/the-fascination. For more on Sleight of Mind Set workshops, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/ and for more about the Show Not Tell principle, please look at mindsways.com/SNT/

TRICKS OF THE MIND

The real power of Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry lies not with just the tricks, but the effect that the delivery of the tricks have on people. On the workshops and in the packs we give you the tricks, however, learning to use them and turn them into effects is where the real power lies.

Delivering these effects, you can evoke the making of the extraordinary. By combining the tricks with the energy of your words, your message and your personality, you make yourself stand out, stimulate fascination and create interest in you. This is when the real magic happens, in the minds of others. To see what other's have said about the workshops, please see mindsways.com/about/what-people-say/

To see a few interesting examples of how magic can be used in communication, please see mindsways.com/the-fascination# PsychologicalTED

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY?

To start with there are many definitions of psychology, but the one that sums it up for me is "the science of how we think". Next is the Artistry part, again, there have been many definitions but I like to think that artistry is a blend of:

Creating connection, rapport and emotions

Telling stories

Gaining and holding attention

Producing insights

Displaying human nature

Cognition

Show, Not Tell

Multiple Moments of Interest, Interaction and Insights (MMI's)

Therefore, Psychological Artistry is the blending of these two to create a method for successful communication. Psychological Artistry is where science and art meet Mind Magic.

Psychological Artistry is a route to form:

New Ideas

New Voices

New Questions

New Perspectives

New Expressions for our Passions

New Experiments

Expanded horizons

Emotional Engagement

Using Psychological Artistry is a way to express your personality, it:

Improves personal delivery

Increases your visibility

Enhances personal image and style

Powerful differential

Creates presence and raises profile

Increases perceptual awareness

Learning Psychological Artistry and Mind Magic is all about gaining access to valuable and guarded secrets.

Interesting examples of how all is not as it appears are the McGurk effect and Prof. Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect", a well-known Fred Astaire clip and Rory Sutherland's Perspective Is Everything talk. Please take a look here or go to mindsways.com/SMS. These illustrate both the power and the approach of Psychological Artistry. I would love to know what you think.

MINDFUL ILLUSIONS

Understanding how powerful a role illusions can play in our life is extremely important. We can get dragged into the illusion that we cannot change ourselves, and this can affect us very deeply. We have to keep in mind that these beliefs are based on neuro-pathways that have wired themselves together in our past, and though they may even dominate our thoughts now, brain plasticity means we do not have to have this in our future. To see more about this, please mindsways.com/SMS#InfiniteMind

The SNT kit, which you get included in the price for the Sleight of Mind Set workshop, clearly illustrates that this previous wiring does not have to equal the future. It clearly shows us that we cannot believe what we see, but we see what we believe. For more on the SNT kit, please see mindsways.com/SNT/

THE ART OF CRITICAL THINKING

Our mind is our greatest strength, but is also the root of many of our flaws and weaknesses. We are emotional beings and do not always follow logic and critical thinking. However, logic and critical thinking are learned skills that still play an important role in our lives. This is another benefit of learning about Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry, because logic and critical thinking are skills and abilities that can be deliberately practised and developed through Mind Magic.

We all have flaws in thinking, including;

Logical fallacies

False assumptions

Unreliable memories

Rule of thumbs thinking

Beliefs through illusions

These fallacies are all used and highlighted by magicians. Learning and understanding Mind Magic is about applying a rational and logical system to our emotional situation. It is this ability that allows you to demonstrate you value, engage people on a deeply interesting level and help others which dramatically increases with your understanding of Mindful Illusions, Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry.

Just before I took this, the net was in the water and shortly before it was hauled out, a group of boys and men (in the background in this shot) who were standing in the water in something of a line, all ran at the net together to chase the fish further into the net.

It's common knowledge I guess that this is the world's highest navigable lake, 3800 m.s above sea-level.

- Something to puzzle over: "New analysis of the language and gesture of the Aymara indicates they have a concept of time opposite to all the world's studied cultures, so that the past is ahead of them and the future behind. ... Appearing in the current issue of the journal Cognitive Science, the study is coauthored, with Berkeley linguistics professor Eve Sweetser, by Rafael Nunez, associate professor of cognitive science and director of the Embodied Cognition Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego."

William L. Fox's research concerns perception and landscape and the transformative power of human cognition. His current topic is the Anthropocene, a new epoch of geological time determined by ecological transformation of the planet due to human actions. Fox's talk will trace the development of earth systems science form Alexander von Humboldt to Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen, who proposed the Anthropocene, and examine the synergy between artists - including Timothy C. Ely's work, currently featured in a large exhibition at the Northwest Museum of Arts and culture - and scientists, as they study, represent, and seek to modify the environment.

Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud) and Stephen Vitiello’s residency investigates the spatial dimensions of sonic environments as a common territory in visual research, music and cognition. The artists traverse the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating genre-crossing sound pieces that use technology in unconventional ways and disrupt perceptions of the surrounding space. Through this residency, the ongoing investigations of space advanced by the MIT Program in Art Culture and Technology are combined with cutting-edge aural research.

In Sonic Bodies, visiting artists Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud) and Stephen Vitiello were joined by David Shively (percussion) and Jennifer Choi (violin) of the Either/Or ensemble for a performance with live visualizations by Madeline Gallagher. The program explores the resonanced of the body by placing the audience within a group of speakers that shift and sculpt a sonic landscape.

Scanner and Stephen Vitiello’s residency investigated the spatial dimensions of sonic environments as a common territory in visual research, music and cognition. The artists traversed the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating genre-crossing sound pieces that use technology in unconventional ways and disrupt perceptions of the surrounding space. Through this residency, the ongoing investigations of space advanced by the MIT Program in Art Culture and Technology are combined with cutting-edge aural research.

Scanner (Robin Rimbaud) and Stephen Vitiello’s residency is presented by the MIT Center for Art, Science and Technology, Professor Gediminas Urbonas and the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology.

Oppenheimer's Garden 2013

A large scale installation at the Gamut Gallery for the Liminal Cognition Exhibition.

The name Oppenheimer's Garden references Oppenheimer's research on the atomic bomb and the mushroom cloud produced by the nuclear reaction. This installation displays a variety of clouds composed of mushroom's which literally translates this devastating phenomenon, but conceptually offers a contradictory display as the cloud's appear to be living organisms.

I've utilized mushroom's in my previous work as a metaphor for the life force, from it's vitality and inability to be constrained in Heisenberg's Garden, to it's nature with energy in Albert's Garden and now in it's relation to water in Oppenheimer's Garden. All living organisms are mostly composed of water, condensed clouds if you will. Oppenheimer's Garden is in essence, a translation of the life force juxtaposed with the greatest form of destruction we've yet come to know.
