The trailer holds the hydrogen fuel cell technology that is used to support the batteries of the electric bus, thereby extending its range. Surely it must be the shortest vehicle registered in the country.

This is the first in a series of images prepared in collaboration with Keith McGillivray (Flickr user KM_Edinburgh). Keith provided the source images, this VDL Citea and the accompanying MAN Lion’s City, and will be publishing his own versions in liveries of his choice. This particular version is different in that we have agreed a common theme and produced consecutively numbered examples: 282 in ELB livery, which you can see here; and 281/8 in variations of the standard Lothian livery, which you can see on Keith’s site (see below).
I hadn’t paid much attention to Lothian prior to the ELB operation, which must have one of the best liveries around, presenting the traditional colours of the erstwhile Eastern Scottish Omnibuses Limited in contemporary Lothian house style. ELB currently operates a single service, the 113 from Western General Hospital to Pencaitland, east of Edinburgh in former Eastern Scottish territory. Since launching the service in June 2011, ELB has reported heavy loadings and rumours abound that the five Wright-bodied Volvo B7RLE single-deckers will be replaced by (or supplemented with) double-deckers on a more permanent basis that the current peak-hour workings.
This tri-axle Volvo suggests another possible but less probable solution. Some artistic licence has been used in retaining the single-width entrance from the source image - a feature unlikely to appear on a UK service bus (21-Mar-13).
