I'm actually not sure if this is checkmate or not. But I figure if an opponent is reaching across to touch one of your pieces (and your king especially), it can't be good.

Take a seat, tune out the buzz of the city for a nice game of chess in Bryant Park, in midtown Manhattan. For a small fee ($3 for a half hour), the New York Chess & Backgammon Club rents chess, checkers, backgammon and Scrabble boards. Alongside the manicured lawns of the public library, office workers face off while their colleagues hover over the tables munching sandwiches. These two found a quiet spot. And... there's an empty table! Chess anyone?

Stanko playing and winning at Washington Square. Truth be said, the game took 25 minutes, so the challenger turned off the clock, since both he and Stanko kept elaborating on the moves while Stanko's time was running out. Second, the finale came after a while of both me and Stanko's opponent prompting Stanko to look for a better move. Third, the guy may not have been playing to his full potential, especially at the beginning. It was still funny to watch his surprise after Stanko's checked his king in the fourth move.

This public chessboard in Stuttgart's Killesberg Park doesn't exactly invite you to play a game ...

Finally I fought myself through to you,

so many obstacles in my way.

But now I stand right before you,

and there I intend to stay.

You can choose to love or to die,

there is no difference, in fact.

So please stop to be shy

and let us connect.

Checkmate: 16-year old kid beating dad at chess! This is only the second time he has ever been beaten by his daughter!

This was shot during a hot day in Timisoara.

For my "Be Awesome" project, I've been improving my chess game this month - 30 days, 30 games.

Both my boys have been in chess clubs and recently my eldest played at county level. They're very good at kicking my arse. So I have been practising, either against them, against Rob or against a computer.

I can now beat the kids about 50% of the time and I think I lost every single game I played against the computer, but I've learned a lot more about chess strategy this month.

I won this game though :)

Found this massive chess board at Applewood Farm Winery nr Stouffville, Ont. Though I haven't played in a while chess is one of my favourite board games.

This little guy made his way up on the table and was having a ball until his mother noticed.

A lunchtime game of chess, played with coloured beer bottle tops, comes to a sudden conclusion. I just happened to come across this in the backstreets of the Warrorot market in Chiangmai city.

come on, now who here doesn't have a "dino" chess board?

Based on the Immortal Game played between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky on 21 June 1851 in London. Of course, I made a mistake when setting this up. Luigi (the queen) should not be there since he was sacrificed by Anderssen to set up the checkmate. Thankfully, Bowser is still in checkmate even with Luigi there.

As for post-processing, I liked the general idea of the Yesteryear Lightroom preset but used different values for shadow tone and highlight tone. Lots of clarity was added and vibrance/saturation was substantially reduced. Peach's face was burned ever so slightly.

In other news, I have Photoshop now. Yay?

Edit: Not an outright checkmate due to my Luigi mistake. Birdo (Knight) can capture Peach (Bishop). I'm pretty sure it's still checkmate in a couple more moves though as Luigi (Queen) can capture Birdo and force checkmate from there.
