So, you’re moving to a new house. Let’s avoid the fluff and get right down to the Checklist for Moving into a New House:
1) Collect free cardboard boxes. Contact local restaurants, grocery stores, and furniture establishments. These places are absolutely riddled with extra cardboard. Some might even have some spare bubble wrap.
2) Sort and purge. Go through your stuff room by room and determine what to keep and what to give to Salvation Army or Goodwill. As you’re sorting your chosen items be sure to make a list of all those that will need special packing or delicate care (i.e. heirlooms, china, vases, etc…)
3) Research and compare moving companies. Look at services, prices, and moving insurance. Read the local and national reviews so you have a well-rounded idea of the company’s policies, ethics, and overall quality.
4) Create a Moving Binder. This holds all your receipts from your moving company, the paperwork from changing your address, your new internet, energy, and the phone contracts, the registration information for your children’s new school, this checklist, and your items inventory.
5) Pack an “unpacking” box filled with scissors, allen wrenches, screwdrivers, and anything else required to construct furniture, labeled ziplock bags, tape, dust cloths, and definitely three types of glue.
6) Start Using up the things you don’t want to bring with you. Food, cleaning supplies, cosmetics, etc…
7) Defrost and clean your freezer and refrigerator the night before leaving.
8) Take measurements. Take measurements of your space when you’re considering buying. Measure your furniture and compare it to your new home’s dimensions to make sure everything fits.
9) Label all your boxes. Just do it. Organize them by room so there is minimal moving once the boxes are inside. The only exception? Separate your valuables to a “safe box” that you transport yourself.
10) Be sure to forward your medical records to your new physician as well as getting all your prescriptions filled before you go.
11) Clear your schedule. Make sure there is nothing going on in your life other than moving on your moving day.
12) Pack your suitcases. As you get closer to your moving date, make sure your suitcases are packed with all the immediate things you’ll need, such as clothing, blankets, medications, snacks, children’s favorite toys, etc…
13) Set up your internet. (Especially if you have kids). Having the kids help with unpacking is necessary, however, sometimes you’ll want to tackle an area just you and your spouse. Keeping entertained, whether it’s background Netflix or another round of Angry Birds, is essential for maintaining a sunny mood during the multifaceted unpacking endeavor.
14) Fill out your change of address forms. Also, remember to send your address to any family or friends you want to remain in contact with. Social media is a great thing, but actual physical contact is better.
15) Set up your energy. Unpacking takes more than a week in most cases. You’re going to want lights and heat.
16) On moving day, be sure to go over your inventory of boxes with the movers while the truck is being packed and unloaded for optimum efficiency

I was wondering why this skipper was staying so still when I tried to get a photograph of it. No wonder it was fooled! The spider has disguised itself with a flower of the same color; fooled me, too. When I tried to look it up on the internet I thought it might be a Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia). (When I mark this photo on the map above, using the gps readings from my camera, it tells me I'm in Bon Ami, Florida, which I have never heard of or seen while I am in it, and the poor skipper surely would not agree with the name.)

[Edit Nov 12, 2017: It seems that to the Yakima County Compiler, it is more important to maintain his grudge against me than to provide accurate data. He continues to refuse to acknowledge this sighting of Ross's Geese in Yakima County. That problem child's name is Denny Granstrand. He knows trespassing is wrong. He shouldn't trespass, and he shouldn't have tried to convince me to trespass on the Yakima Christmas Bird Count.]
We went to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon last weekend. It's an amazing place. Among the many highlights was seeing thousands of Ross's Geese -- roughly 17,000 in one area near the refuge. Here's a poor quality digiscoped photo with 5 Ross's Geese, 2 Snow Geese, and 3 Canada Geese, here in Yakima County. I have many more digiscoped photos of these. This one, with the Snow & Canada Geese, offers a good comparison. I didn't try to get closer. Though it might have helped me get better photos, it was not worth the risk that I might disturb these rare visitors. I called bird watching friends, but none was able to come to see them. I was able to give a nice scope view to one of the workers there.
Ross's geese: clean white; smaller than Snow Geese; small bill; lack of "grin patch"; bill/feather junction straight; steep forehead; rounded head; neck doesn't narrow at head; group of Ross's stayed close to, but separate from surrounding 29 Snow Geese; "cute" appearance.
The middle Ross's Goose in this photo was being goosed by the Snow Goose, hence it's slightly odd posture.
This might be the 3rd time Ross's Geese have been found & photographed in Yakima County, Washington. I found one a couple of years ago, but got only a flying away photo. The landowner did not want local bird listers to know of it, knowing of the unethical practices of several of them. Jim Christensen found a Ross's Goose at Randall Park in October, 2010. His sighting was doubted by "experts" -- the local trespassholes. They later realized Jim was correct. They "got" it on their checklists. That seems to be a strong motivation for them to recognize they're wrong. Sadly, it doesn't motivate them to admit it, or apologize for presuming and declaring that someone (other than themselves) who finds a rare bird is wrong. Jim is a naturalist and retired science teacher, so it's no surprise, to reasonable people, that he was correct. No one gave Jim Christensen credit for his rare bird find in their eBird accounts. That's too is no surprise in Yakima County.
Please always consider the sensitivity of birds, nearby humans, and the environment.
Don't lie & Den'y to try to cover up your bird listing misdeeds & mistakes. Locals who do are a continuing disgrace -- like the occupiers of Malheur and the White House. Don't trespass on Yakama land while chasing owls around in a field; don't trespass on Yakama Nation closed lands; don't take credit for others' finds; don't trespass on Priest Rapids Dam or on Simon Martinez private property or closed areas in the Yakima Training Center military area; don't claim a Red-necked Phalarope is a Red Phalarope; don't illegally harass Spotted Owls or quiz bird watchers about a rare bird sighting on your (invalid) Big Day; don't change your eBird locations to try to cover up your trespassing; don't try to get others to adopt or to excuse your illegal and unethical bird listing practices, or to believe your lies.
Please read, PRACTICE, and promote the ABA Code of Birding Ethics.

A wonderful addition to the Parksville-Qualicum checklist, this bird has been seen for over a week now at a friend's house in French Creek. It is so sad the games that some birders play, trying to outdo their peers by trying to hide the existence of a rarity by announcing that the homeowner doesn't want their address revealed. Too bad for them the homeowner in this case is an old friend, and told us the whole story. You creeps should be ashamed of yourselves. It's just a bird for pete's sake. Get a friggin life.
