DC has an informal carpool tradition at rush hour... commuters line up and wait for a single driver who wants to use the high-occupancy vehicle (carpool) lane on I-395 heading into the Virginia suburbs. They call these "slug lines." I'm not sure where the term came from, but there's a web site about it.
My carpool buddy took this day off so I got my camera with me and left work a little early. On my way back home I stopped by Whittier Narrows Park, hoping to see some action. But on this hot hot day, nothing was in sight, I was the only one in the field.
Feeling disappointed, I was about to pack my stuff and drove home. Then I saw this RT hawk slowly flew closer and closer, until he was right above me.
He came to keep me company.
For the last couple of semesters, Ben and I have been enjoying the opportunity to carpool on the days on which I'm on the JCCC campus. 1&1 is just down the street, so I drop him off on my way to campus. This is the view from the front of 1&1, which looks out onto I35 (the northbound lanes are the closer ones).
I love being able to carpool... it ends up being almost 40 minutes of extra time together each day we get to do it, and leaving at 6:30 a.m. to make it to campus for office hours at 7 a.m. is much easier with someone to talk to in the morning. Sadly, because of my teaching schedule this spring, we won't be able to carpool much (if any). I have a MW night class. Hopefully we can still work out a Friday carpool schedule for some weeks.

It took me a while to realize what these were...To clear up traffic, a lot of Beijing's main roads have special Olympic lanes. We get to travel in them =P
