Wings Island is public, but due to the long (3/4 to 1 mile) walk to the dunes and lack of any resources you'll find that it is very secluded. Cat's family has a house only 4 miles away and didn't know this place existed.

The weed was in, which is why you see brown in the breaking waves. But it's probably the reason for that beautiful golden color too.

That Time of the Day

Why I took this picture or shared it:

These houses, building, I don’t believe, are in disrepair. They were pounded by the storms severely, I understand, recently. They seem to be getting ready for renovation, or at least for a paint job. I took multiple pictures from different angles, at different distances. From a composition perspective, this one appeared to me as the most satisfactory: the fences in the foreground, the bushes in between, and not-fully empty skies… They all seem to be populated the layers properly. The overall light and the cloud lines on the sky reflect both the time of the day as well as the rather sad mood of the moment.

Gear used:

Fujifilm X00T with 23 mm fixed lens

The rationale behind the settings:

ISO 200 must have been my decision for better image quality given enough available daylight. Aperture f11 must have been also my choice to have sharpness on as many layers as possible. Nothing is in motion: the shutter speed 1/170 was faster than my needs to hand hold a camera with a 23 mm lens (35 mm equivalent in full frame).

Film Simulation Used: Classic Chrome — Photometry: Pattern — Sharpness: 2 — White Balance: Auto — Color: High — Sharpness: Hard. The only value that is, looking back, surprising to me, is the high saturation for the color; given the mood and overall look of the scene, I thought, I would have preferred neutral value to be a better option for Classic Chrome; but somehow what I must have seen through the EVF might have convinced me for saturating the colors.

File utilized in preparing the photograph:

JPEG-out-of camera. 16:9 Cropping was already chosen while taking the picture.

Adjustments during post-processing:

Minimal: Texture, clarity augmented by 11, de-haze by 9. Vibrance pushed by 23. I must have been trying to avoid “too muted colors."
