To which I replied... :) You're absolutely 100% correct Stuart :) (giggle) I've never denied that I'm a promoter. I have had my own business since 1984. When you're the CEO of a company, aren't you supposed to promote your company? I see everyone else doing the same with their own businesses. Since when is that an issue? I promote other people, other states, news etc. Quit frankly, I work hard and I'm proud of the work that I do. I don't see anyone else out there with the guts to be on the front lines and take the hits. I don't know many people that LIVE with cancer and continue to try to be productive and work as much as I do. Tooting my own horn, You're damn right. :) Loud and proud my brothers and sisters. I work my ass off. :) Rapid Fire Marketing (RFMK: Stock Symbol) was proud of my segment on Varney & Co and posted it on their site. Thanks for the support RFMK :) Did you guys happen to notice the CANNACig in the interview? I didn't get to mention it by name. By Jonathan Alter:
Go ahead, shoot me. I like the status quo on health care in the United States. I've got health insurance and I don't give a damn about the 47 million suckers who don't. Obama and Congress must be stopped. No bill! I'm better off the way things are.
I'm with that woman who wrote the president complaining about "socialized medicine" and added: "Now keep your hands off my Medicare." That's the spirit!
Why should I be entitled to the same insurance that members of Congress get? Blue Dogs need a lot of medical attention to treat their blueness. I'm just a regular guy and definitely deserve less.
Quantcast
I had cancer a few years ago. I like the fact that if I lose my job, I won't be able to get any insurance because of my illness. It reminds me of my homeowners' insurance, which gets canceled after a break-in. I like the choice I'd face if, God forbid, the cancer recurs—sell my house to pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars in treatment, or die. That's what you call a "post-existing condition."
I like the absence of catastrophic insurance today. It meant that my health-insurance plan (one of the better ones, by the way) only covered about 75 percent of the cost of my cutting-edge treatment. That's as it should be—face cancer and shell out huge amounts of money at the same time. Nice.
I like the "lifetime limits" that many policies have today. Missed the fine print on that one, did you? It means that after you exceed a certain amount of reimbursement, you don't get anything more from the insurance company. That's fair.
Speaking of fair, it seems fair to me that cost-cutting bureaucrats at the insurance companies—not doctors—decide what's reimbursable. After all, the insurance companies know best.
Yes, the insurance company status quo rocks. I learned recently about something called the "loading fees" of insurance companies. That's how much of every health-care dollar gets spent by insurance companies on things other than the medical care—paperwork, marketing, profits, etc. According to a University of Minnesota study, up to 47 percent of all the money going into the health-insurance system is consumed in "loading fees." Even good insurance companies spend close to 30 percent on nonmedical stuff. Sweet.
The good news is that the $8,000 a year per family that Americans pay for their employer-based health insurance is heading up! According to the Council of Economic Advisers, it will hit $25,000 per family by 2025. The sourpusses who want health-care reform say that's "unsustainable." Au contraire.
And how could the supporters of these reform bills believe in anything as stupid as a "public option"? Do they really believe that the health-insurance cartel deserves a little competition to keep them honest? Back in the day, they had a word for competition. A bad word. They called it capitalism. FedEx versus the U.S. Postal Service, CNN versus PBS—just because it's government-backed doesn't mean you can't compete against it. If they believed in capitalism, the insurance companies would join the fray and compete.
'm glad they don't. I prefer the status quo, where the for-profit insurance companies suck at the teat of the federal government. Corporate welfare's what we've got, and it's a damn good system. Through a wonderful program called Medicare Advantage, the insurance companies receive hundreds of billions of dollars in fees to administer a program that the government is already running. Don't touch that baby. You'd be messing with the handiwork of some fine lobbyists.
You know what part of the status quo I like best? It's a longstanding system for paying doctors called "fee for service." That's where doctors get paid for each procedure they perform, as if my auto dealer got paid separately for the steering wheel, brakes, and horn instead of for the car. Fee-for-service is why the medical care at that doc-in-a-box at my mall is so superior to the Mayo Clinic or Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where the doctors are on salary. Who would want to mess with that?
OK, if you really press me, I'm for one change. It's the one that Republicans trot out to prove they're "reformers," too. We could save our whole system if we just capped malpractice awards. Two of our biggest states—California and Texas—did it a few years ago and nothing has changed there, but who cares? It sounds good.
So tell your congressmen and senators when they're home for the summer recess that it's too soon to address this issue. We've only been debating it for 97 years, since Theodore Roosevelt put national health insurance in the Bull Moose Party platform of 1912. We've only had 745 congressional hearings on the subject (I made that number up, but it's got to be close). That's not enough! Let's study this problem more before we do anything about it.
Did I say "problem"? Who said there was a problem? Not me. I like the status quo.

As the years went by Robert's biking boundaries slowly expanded. At first he was allowed only to ride to Mr. White's Gate (at the end of this seen road), then to the stop sign (turn right at the gate), then to Pine Tree Elementary School. HE showed ME recently, by biking from Seattle to San Diego. This is a fuzzy old photo, but I like the feeling of joy and strength suggested here.
When this biking boy was four he received a diagnosis which caused us to fear that his boundaries might soon be far beyond this present world. During those first weeks things like hospital stays, blood counts and the effects of chemotherapy shattered all sense of normalcy. Gone forever was my mother's confidence that I could create a safe and happy world for my children, let alone protect them from harm.
In my despair I went to my secret closet and wept. I knelt in prayer--but what could I say to a God who had allowed this to happen to my innocent son? Why, after all the problems I had borne as a child, did God want to cause me this devastating pain now? Why, on the fabulously ordinary day before we learned of the leukemia, wasn't I the happiest woman in the world, as I would be now, if only the illness was a crazy mistake and the whole thing a bad dream?
I think some part of me felt betrayed. You see, I thought I had a special understanding with God--I would do my best to keep the commandments, and He, in return, would grant me everything I wanted. A simple equation! In fact, I thought that I was so good that I was probably something of a "teacher's pet"...that God counted me as one of his favorites, much more worthy of blessings than the sinful and self-indulgent people I consciously tried not to be like. Hadn't I devoted my life to being a mother--how on earth could God think to take away one of MY children?
I'd read in the Bible that at one time Christ asked his apostles, "Are you still with me?" and one of them answered, "Yea, Lord: where would we go?" There may be some ways to understand that answer. In my Mormon view, I've interpreted it to mean, "Who else has the answers, power and authority? Who else can tell us who we are, and what we need to do?" For me, I felt that if I couldn't pray to God in the name of Christ, to whom could I turn? Anyone? No one?
I guess I felt my options were to stop praying, or keep praying. From habit, belief, need, and I see now, hope--I kept praying. I decided to overlook the betrayal I felt, because I really needed help.
Sometimes I just imagined my Listener as a Friend to whom I could express my pain. I didn't ask for anything, or complain. I just cried. I grew to better love the Person who seemed to be a sympathetic listener. Other times I did ask for things. I remember especially this prayer: "He's only four, Heavenly Father. Do you think you could give him four more years, so I can see what he looks like as an eight-year old? and if you can do that, how about letting him make it to twelve? or sixteen--that would be nice. And if that much, how about thirty-two?"
One evening, after spending the day with Robert at Children's Hospital, I reviewed the events of the day. We had started the morning filling out the "menu" for the next day's meals. Robert loved that. Then we watched cartoons, and then went for a walk to the play room, and even outside, to see flowers and cherry blossoms. It was warm outside, and the air was fresh and felt good. We listened to birds sing. We went back to the room for lunch. We painted with watercolors on folded paper towels, and had popsicles. We watched "Star Wars" on TV.
As Robert slept that evening, I thought again of my prayer for more years of life...and the thought came to me, "At least we've had this day." I thought of the many women who never had a child of their own; of those who had miscarried; of those whose children had died suddenly, or in natural disasters, or wars, or even plagues. I thought of women who had to work long hours, or of those who mindlessly just never took the time to play with their children. Yes--I was blessed. I had had this wonderful day.
And now, looking at this picture, I am so grateful. What a blessing, to see this strong and joyful 11-year boy on his bike, his legs showing new muscles, his face lit by the sun and his hair pushed back by the breeze as he flies down the road in front of his home. I am so glad that each of my children have lived to become adults--and I will never take that for granted. (Robert will turn 27 this year! In 5 more years I will have what I once thought was a wildly impossible dream, when he reaches 32!)
One not uniquely Mormon lesson was learned--that gratitude can be the antithesis of despair. However, I have wondered how I might have faced this situation if I hadn't been a Mormon--hadn't read those many scriptures and sat in (repetitive) classes that taught about the principles of prayer, and gratitude? As God expanded my own boundaries past a smug superiority to a more realistic humility, those principles moved rapidly from being theoretical discussion topics to essential life skills. I feel blessed by the faith that has helped me, so many times.

Tristan is 3 and a half years old, a cancer survivor, and an amputee.
He is my hero, and my son.
While Zelda and Josie played, and Juan catapulted unhappy birds into wooden structures, I sat under a tree and picked up where I started.
Chris was so sweet and bought me all these books I told him I wanted to read this summer.
One of them is My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.
Oh my gosh.
It's just so....
Let me put this in an understandable way.
Relatable. Minus the lawsuits Anna is putting her parents through. Or the relationship between Campbell and Julia (which I also find intimate). But the effects everyone's actions have on each other.
First of all, the older brother, Jesse. My older brother Zack could be his twin. Zack doesn't live with us anymore but he lives about six blocks away in a gang ridden neighborhood. I worry about him so much. My dad doesn't like me visiting him, because its so dangerous. The reason Zack moved away was because of mom. I cried when he left. I miss him so much, but sometimes I see him around town, with a beer in his hand, or a needle. But he doesn't set stuff on fire.
Beside's the brother situation, I remember when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Me waking up one night and seeing take chunks of her hair out. It scared me, because I though only boys were bald. I remember I made my dad shave my hair off, so I could be just like my mom. Some of the girls in my classroom didn't know my mom had cancer, and they called her a freak and made fun of me.
All the nights I spent in the hospital waiting room. I went there so often, everyone knew my name. My brother kept telling me she was going to die, but I told him God would never let mom die because she loved Him so much.
But then one night, mom stopped breathing. We were in the room with her. I was about to fall asleep and then a loud, continuous beep sounded. All these doctors rushed in and me, my dad, Zack, and baby Juan were forced out.
When my dad told me she had gone to Heaven, I thought he meant that she went to Heaven and will be back. So I waited. And I waited. And I waited, until it finally hit me she was dead.
I promised myself I wouldn't ever care for anyone else. I hated those people who had cancer, and survived. Why couldn't my mom survive? She wasn't a bad person. She never lied. She was always there for me. I tried to avoid the topic of cancer, or illness.
Lucky for me, I made a friend, named Claire, who's brother has been battling cancer since he was three. It annoyed me he was still alive. As I spent more time around Claire, and Jake, I realized that some people come and go, regardless of their past. Emma, just nine years old, died in a fire. A life with so much potential, just taken away. But you know, that's life. We all die eventually, some sooner than others. The important thing to remember, is that if you truly love someone, no matter whether they are with you, six blocks away, or looking down on you from Heaven, they are always with you.
If I could, I would marry Jodi Picoult. I'm not kidding. Although I prefer Chris, but you know.
If you read all this, you are crazy, because I'm pretty sure you have been killed mentally by my annoying life story paragraphs. But you are so awesome, and in the future, I think things will be less confusing, hopefully. Because if they aren't then that's just a waste.

Chemo brain, refers to the effects chemo can have on the brain including memory loss and some other stuff I don't remember. This is also a reference to the expression you wouldn't remember your head if it wasn't attached.

Part of my ongoing cancer series that I want to turn into a book to raise money for a cancer charity. I used some of my left over medications and projected them in different places as a metaphor of how cancer can affect you and be on your mind no matter where you are, it can be hard to escape from that reality but it's part of the struggle to continue living your life as normal as possible despite how you may feel. I'm still trying to be one of those cancer survivors that seem to do everything they put their mind too.
