From April 18th to the 29th, cordon and search operations are conducted by different combat teams that are composed of infantry, combat engineers and armoured troops.
Since April 10, more than 3,500 troops from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG) are in the Gagetown Garrison training areas (N. B.) for Exercise LION INTREPIDE, and will remain there until May 9, 2012. With its diverse terrain, Gagetown Garrison provides the troops from Valcartier with a different training environment and a vast training ground. Exercise LION INTREPIDE 2012 allows the units from 5 CMBG, and affiliated units, to renew with different war concepts that concentrate on more classic military techniques. This reorientation is essential in order to prepare the soldiers to carry out future combat missions, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and other types of mission.

After ingesting a miniscule rock into the CC-115 Buffaloe's pitot static system during takeoff from Prince Rupert, we required an escort back to Comox when we encountered IFR conditions. Not 100% sure what altitude we hit, but am reasonably certain we exceeded the Buffalo's service ceiling of 25,000? 446 met us above the cloud and together we made our way to Comox.
The main gun on the HMCS Vancouver -- a single Bofors 57mm Mk 2.
The Bofors 57 mm has a 120-round magazine and a rate of fire of about 220 shots/minute. The rate of fire and the ability to change ammunition types quickly makes the gun suitable for engaging both aerial and naval targets. (Wikipedia)

Change of command ceremony of the Canadian-led multinational NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup Latvia
A ceremony was held today at the Ādaži Cultural Center near Riga Latvia, marking the change of command of the Canadian-led multinational NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup Latvia from its outgoing Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Wade Rutland, to its incoming Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Sean French. This event highlights the end of the first rotation of NATO eFP BG troops deployed to Latvia. Along with the other three eFP BGs in Estonia, Lithuania and Poland, these BGs are a demonstration of NATO solidarity, determination and ability to defend the Alliance against possible aggression. As part of the Alliance posture, these measures are defensive in nature, proportionate, consistent with our international commitments and demonstrate our respect for the rules-based European security architecture.

It is customary during Basic Training to be taught drill throughout the cousre, but during the first five weeks, the most crucial movements are the ones being learned. To signify that the recruit is still in this phase, the beret that they wear bears no emblem at all. Upon the completion of the fifth week, and with a pass on the drill test, the recruit is issued a badge for his beret. This is to show that they are making progress with their drill and overall deportment. It shows the Crown, as a symbol to our allegience to the Queen; the ring of Maple Leaves, to signify our Canadian heritage; the Eagle is a symbol of the Air Force; the swords are a symbol of the Army; and the anchor is where I am...
