The Millau Viaduct is a multi-span cable-stayed bridge completed in 2004 across the gorge valley of the Tarn near Millau in Southern France. In an Anglo-French partnership, it was designed by the French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and English architect Norman Foster. As of November 2018, it is the tallest bridge in the world, having a structural height of 336.4 metres.

Day 46 - cable...

Another day I went out (this time with a CF Card) and it didn't worked out the way I wanted to. I waited an hour for the sun to go down and then the sky wasn't looking good any more... I'm gonna get the shot I'm looking for, so let's try it again tomorrow.

The longest cable car in Israel. The ride to the top of Manara Cliff, the highest cliff in Israel, takes 10 minutes, and offers a breathtaking view of the Hula Valley, the Golan Heights and Mt. Hermon. The lower station is at 90 meters above sea level, while the upper station is 840 meters above sea level

Not everyone has cable, but, in our neighborhood, when we have problems, they don't just send anyone out for repairs. This guy works real cheap; like, for nuts! The only drawback, sometimes he creates more problems than solutions. He seems to like chewing on insulation.

Old or new, Japan has many fascinating bridges.

It took a while to turn this flat pic taken in soft dull light into this.

I used about 6 layers treating each differently and then blending them to produce the pic.

A cable-stayed bridge has one or more towers (or pylons), from which cables support the bridge deck. A distinctive feature are the cables or stays, which run directly from the tower to the deck, normally forming a fan-like pattern or a series of parallel lines. This is in contrast to the modern suspension bridge, where the cables supporting the deck are suspended vertically from the main cable, anchored at both ends of the bridge and running between the towers. The cable-stayed bridge is optimal for spans longer than cantilever bridges and shorter than suspension bridges. This is the range within which cantilever bridges would rapidly grow heavier, and suspension bridge cabling would be more costly.

Cable-stayed bridges have been known since the 16th century and used widely since the 19th. Early examples often combined features from both the cable-stayed and suspension designs, including the Brooklyn Bridge. The design fell from favor through the 20th century as larger gaps were bridged using pure suspension designs, and shorter ones using various systems built of reinforced concrete. It once again rose to prominence in the later 20th century when the combination of new materials, larger construction machinery, and the need to replace older bridges all lowered the relative price of these designs.

Two strip malls on Las Vegas Boluevard, Cable Center Shops and Hawaiian Marketplace, have closed and will likely be demolished as the owner plans to build "a new flagship retail, entertainment and dining experience" on the site. This location is directly across the street from the CityCenter development, which includes the Aria Resort & Casino, Waldorf Astoria hotel, and luxury shopping center The Shops at Crystals; and immediately south of the rumored resort and casino financed by Tilman Fertitta.

Some info from Wikipedia:

The Emirates Air Line is a cable car link across the River Thames in London, England built by Doppelmayr with sponsorship from the airline Emirates. The service opened on 28 June 2012 and is operated by Transport for London. In addition to transport across the river, the service advertises "a unique view of London". The duration of a single crossing is ten minutes (reduced to five minutes in rush hour as the service speed is increased).

The service, announced in July 2010 and estimated to cost £60 million, comprises a 1-kilometre (0.62 mi) gondola line that crosses the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Victoria Dock, to the west of ExCeL London.

There are 36 passenger gondolas, of which 34 are in use at any one time, with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers each. All passenger gondolas are ready for disabled persons using wheelchairs, including those ones with leg rest extensions. There are also two (open) engineers' gondolas for use by maintenance staff.

Good to see there are a few warbonnets still roaming around. The dash-8s and scungy 6xx series seem to have been parked, but what's left of the 7xx and 4700-19 batches seem in reasonable nick, despite coming up on two decades of service next year.

The cable car exhibit at Griffith Park's Travel Town Museum leaves a lot to be desired. But I guess it takes time and money to restore something like this, which has been in a state of decay for as long as I can remember.

Alpine view abandoned sanatorium .

The cable car was in a building away from the main sanatorium, I have never seen such a thing as an abandoned cable car anywhere so seeing it within an abandoned hospital was an extra treat for me, This would have been the only way up or down from this place in the winter as the small winding road was a challenge on a good day. It must have been a nerve testing experience to use this contraption swinging about near the trees, In the control room the old TV monitors were held up by the bottom half of a dentist chair!!.

And on another note :

Rip to Steve Jobs a great man who changed the way we all work and play with our much loved Apple computers and ipods and ipads and iphones the list go's on .

I took this from the inside of a cable car in San Francisco, looking out the back. The guy who collected the tickets was standing right in front of me, on the other side of the glass, yet in the picture it looks like you can see right through him! It's quite spooky - I think it's a strange optical illusion, because of the way the buildings on the other side of the street are almost perfectly reflected in the glass. I've studied the picture for ages and still can't fathom it!
