It was a typical Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m. when Boston Tower (BOS) controller Patrick Sullivan was contacted by the pilot of N477GJ, a BE40, requesting to taxi to Runway 9. The pilot read his clearance back incorrectly, which led Sullivan to reissue the taxi clearance, which the pilot again read back incorrectly. Continued errors in understanding instructions and following them resulted in the pilot heading directly toward a runway which had an aircraft on short final.

“I jumped up and said, ‘STOP!’ and the pilot stopped and said, ‘Thank you’ and asked if he was in trouble,” Sullivan recalled. “I said, ‘No, you didn’t cross the runway, you didn’t get onto the runway. Just stay right there.’” Due to Sullivan’s quick action and clear communication, the pilot was able to take off without catastrophe or further incident.

NATCA is pleased to welcome to the #NATCACFS main stage American Airlines Chief Operating Officer David Seymour, one of our keynote speakers for this year’s conference. Seymour leads all of American Airlines’ operations including airport operations, flight operations, technical operations, flight service, safety, cargo operations and the Integrated Operations Center, where the airline’s daily operations are managed. An Army Ranger, Airborne officer, and former Operations Officer for the U.S. Army Parachute Team “Golden Knights,” Seymour shared lessons from his long career in aviation and leadership with our CFS attendees.

NATCA’s Director of Safety & Technology Tom Adcock kicked off this morning’s Tech Talks at #NATCACFS 2022. Tech talks are a chance for CFS attendees to hear detailed updates on commercial space, new technologies being implemented in the National Airspace System, and more from the NATCA and FAA reps closest to these lines of business.

“I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your hard work and professionalism, and I am immensely proud to be part of the NATCA family,” Adcock said in the Safety & Technology Spotlight for #NATCACFS 2022. Read the full feature here:
