Named for the former Chairman of the NATCA National Safety Committee, the Steve Hansen Safety Advocate Award is presented to a NATCA member who has made extraordinary achievements and has worked tirelessly on NATCA’s behalf to be a leader in furthering the cause of aviation safety. While each winner has contributed their skills, dedication, and work ethic in different ways, with varying areas of expertise, there is one thing that ties them all together: they are all passionate about safety and aviation.
At the #NATCACFS 2022 Awards Luncheon today, NATCA Executive Vice President Andrew LeBovidge presented awards to 2021 winner NATCA's Region X Representative to the National Safety Committee Don Schmeichel (Engineers Northwest Mountain, ENM) and 2022 winner NATCA National Partnership for Safety Representative Michelle Trudeau (Indianapolis Center, ZID).
On a blustery winter day in January 2022, N3039L, a Socata Tobago, was inbound for Manassas Airport (HEF), with snow actively falling and winds roaring. The aircraft began to lose altitude. NATCA member Eric Lomascolo was working radar at Potomac Consolidated TRACON (PCT), and attempted to get the pilot on the ground as soon as possible, but the aircraft overshot the localizer. This made Eric and his brother David, also a PCT member, aware that the pilot needed assistance. An emergency was declared on the pilot's behalf. The brothers utilized their weather awareness to set the pilot up for a second and then a third approach, as the pilot reported, “I’m getting bounced all over the place sir, very violently.”

Former NATCA Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert moderated a panel titled “Synthesizing the NAS: Aviation’s New Frontier and Our Existing System” on the #NATCACFS 2022 main stage, discussing modernization of the global air traffic control system. The discussion included Airlines for America (A4A) Air Traffic Management and Operations Vice President Andy Cebula, NASA Aeronautics Research Institute Director Parimal Kopardekar, NATCA National Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Article 114 Representative Jimmy Smith, and FAA Director of Operations Planning and Integration Wendy O’Connor.
