This was the book study that we attended while in Bali. It was so nice to be able to visit with the friends while in Bali. Especially nice to be in a home, while so far away from home. The bookstudy conductor was very good with his English, that was true actually of the other book study conductors I met. They spoke English well, but the average publisher did not. Some did, some didn't. The book study overseer's wife is an English teacher, so that was good.
I loved the lighting in this photo, I used the bounce-off-the-ceiling flash mode with my large accessory flash unit to get this.
It turned out that it was pouring rain during this bookstudy, and I do mean pouring!! Like a torrential downpour, and thunder and lighting as well, lots of it. A major thunderstorm it seemed to me. I could not get over the amount of rain falling from the sky in one little storm, it seemed the walls or roof might collapse because the falling rain was so strong. . .but the book study continued, it didn't seem to bother them. For us that kind of rain would be like a Hurricane but they didn't miss a beat at the books study. It was probably just your everyday passing thunderstorm for Indonesians.

I showed this picture to Melanie (MacSmiley) and she recognized this right away as hoar frost, so I learned something new.
Hoar frost (sometimes hoarfrost) refers to the white ice crystals, deposited on the ground or exposed objects, that form when the air is moist and surface is cold. Hoar frost is often seen on cold, clear autumn nights. This was on our first snowboarding trip before Christmas, It was a beautiful sunset with beautiful clouds, and snow, it was glorious. I uploaded at least one other similar one.
I only wish I could have used my flash here but battery power was at a premium due to the cold.

Proof positive I was there along with Kilroy.
I don't know who the elderly gent is on the left, but on the right are a young brother and sister, Armel and Sylvie. Another sister with us, Patrice, I think, took the picture.
I did some siteseeing, with the help of the friends, but most of my time was spent theocratically... at The Victorious Faith International Convention ("La Foi Victorieuse") then in the same routine as at home, meetings & field service, visit to Bethel. I even commented in French at the bookstudy (can you say faux pas ?) At the meetings, it was a real rush to sing Kingdom Songs, all in French, too!
I was barely 20 years old. This was my very first trip away from home...ever, and it was a biggie... 3000 miles away from mom and dad, all the way over an ocean. This was not a tour. The brothers arranged for a charter air flight to Paris and back home from Brussels, and they also arranged accommodations. But other than that, we were really on our own. (I had to take a train from Paris to Belgium, all by myself.) I chose to stay in and around Paris most of my time there... a wise decision.
Experiencing the worldwide brotherhood first hand in a foreign country is just plain amazing! I don't know that I would have had the courage to be so adventurous were it not for our theocratic family around the world.
I have lots of slides from the trip I need to scan. So there's lots more to come in the future.
I was out before the crack of dawn hoping to get some sunrise pix of the fresh snow. I didn't realize that it was such a news worthy event at first. At a road block I asked some cop what all the commotion was about and if the freeway was closed. He looked at me like I was stupid, like hadn't I seen the news? Well I don't watch the news, or any TV for that matter. I stay up all night on flickr, chatting with my lovely sisters in far away lands, anyway. . .
It was quite a scene there. With news, and helicopters, and hundreds of big Trucks stranded, unable to transport their cargo. About 25 miles of this road was shut down, everything above about 2000 feet from Alpine to the desert at Ocotillo. Using my trusty 4x4 Jeep nicknamed 'Betsy', I was able to bypass the closed freeway by taking some windy, unpaved backroads up into the hills. There were many cars abandoned so I imagined conditions were pretty bad for people.
The news said that hundreds of people were stranded Thursday afternoon because it almost never snows on this road. People were just out doing their usual traveling and this freak snowstorm appeared in a place where it never snows. So people had to abandon their cars and get rescued and stay in nearby shelters.
Normally in San Diego county only the highest elevations get snow which are small peak areas. But in this storm the cold air was so low that a huge area of the county got blanketed with snow and ice. It hit places that never see snow, like Penasquitos, Ramona, Escondido, etc.
Candace and I were on our way to bookstudy at about 4pm Thursday. We came into the San Dieguito River Valley and we were shocked to see a ton of snow in the local hills, It was still snowing and we had never seen snow so low and so close to the coast and so much of it. It's a sight I'll never forget and I'm so glad we didn't miss it. Even Candace was extremely excited and in shock at the sight, she was saying, "Look dad, it's snowing, it's snowing right now! It's right there!" Even a friend called me during book study (left a message) and told me there was an unbelievable sight of snow that I should grab my camera and get out there. But I wasn't able to go until sunrise.
Part of the shock was that it all happened so fast and it was not even in the Forcast! The weather people got caught by surprise and so did everyone else. It was warm for days, and even in the morning thursday it was warm. Poor Candace went to school with no Jacket and a short skirt, by afternoon she was freezing! But that is a separate story and set of pictures.
Even a friend did a balloon flight Thursday morning and he said it was snowing on them when they got up in the air.

I made them last night in a rush and they were really hard to ice (as they're incredibly moist) so they don't look that great unfortunately. BUT they taste sooo good!! I will definately be making them again! I made these for a family who are moving to a different bookstudy.
At The Rock Church Care Groups, the adults are studying "The Case for Christmas" by Lee Strobel -- Best-selling author of "The Case for Christ" and "The Case for a Creator."
We managed to get everyone's dioramas, along with a few selected written summaries, watercolors and maps, on the shelf outside our classroom. After the book, we learned a little about the real "Karana" and the history behind the story. I created a powerpoint showing photos of the "real" island and animals, which they thought was cool.
Mom noticed I really liked Peter Pan when she put it on, so she made me a costume of my own, complete with red tights and bag of fairy dust.
Having discovered this, this picture has been a source of endless laughter for my bookstudy group.

One of the rules of sucessful baking (or anything really) is not to try anything new when you're tired.
I thought teacup shaped cookies would be cute for the supper after our bookstudy tonight. I didn't have a teacup shape cutter though so I had to make my own template.
Not awful, but I really should have stuck to something I know I make well!
