The carbon electrode is machined while attached to its post. The block is put in the cnc and exact center picked up. Then the electrode is machined with it attached by a screw to its post--at that point the electrode cannot be removed from the post till its done is job burning on the mold. The post with electrode on top is moved over and placed in the edm--it then burns down and the operation is complete. The way the block works is the post fits into an exact fit--slip fit hole in the center of the block--the block is filled with oil in passageways. When the knobs are tightened intense high pressure oil barely expands the steel so that it locks down on the shaft holding it firm. It only takes a few millionths of hydraulic pressure expansion to lock it into place. EDM electrodes are carbon--no great force is exerted on them anyway while machining.
