A bug found burrowing in a stack of damp old newspapers. It had excavated a warren of passages between the layers. If you can identify this please send a comment.
I took this last summer in my back garden. I noticed a spider's web just beneath the aging wooden garden shed but saw no spider. I found a twig closeby and used it to gently tap on one of the thicker strands of the silk holding the structure together. I'm not going to lie; the spider shot out and reached the base of the twig before I could even react. I was lying flat on my stomach so couldn't even leap back! I was absolutely stunned BUT also saw it as an opportunity to get a close up shot...as you do.
So, off I go to get the camera, mount the macro lens and try again. 9/10 times the spider (which I shall aptly name 'Bullet'), shot out and stopped dead once it reached the twig. So long as I didn't make any sudden movements, Bullet would allow me a few seconds to compose and take a shot. After all his hard work, I thought I owed him a meal - a tasty dead fly found nearby.
It's getting very competitive to get into the final 18 for the Olympic Qualifier in Japan.
It sure is nail biting for all players

I am the dog you put to sleep,
as you like to call the needle of oblivion,
come back to tell you this simple thing:
I never liked you--not one bit.
When I licked your face,
I thought of biting off your nose.
When I watched you toweling yourself dry,
I wanted to leap and unman you with a snap.
I resented the way you moved,
your lack of animal grace,
the way you would sit in a chair to eat,
a napkin on your lap, knife in your hand.
I would have run away,
but I was too weak, a trick you taught me
while I was learning to sit and heel,
and--greatest of insults--shake hands without a hand.
I admit the sight of the leash
would excite me
but only because it meant I was about
to smell things you had never touched.
You do not want to believe this,
but I have no reason to lie.
I hated the car, the rubber toys,
disliked your friends and, worse, your relatives.
The jingling of my tags drove me mad.
You always scratched me in the wrong place.
All I ever wanted from you
was food and fresh water in my metal bowls.
While you slept, I watched you breathe
as the moon rose in the sky.
It took all of my strength
not to raise my head and howl.
Now I am free of the collar,
the yellow raincoat, monogrammed sweater,
the absurdity of your lawn,
and that is all you need to know about this place
except what you already supposed
and are glad it did not happen sooner--
that everyone here can read and write,
the dogs in poetry, the cats and the others in prose.

Looks like I'm not the only one who does it ;)
Just kidding, I stopped doing that like 5 years ago!!!11
I think this is an Antlike Flower Beetle, I thought it was a colorful ground beetle at first because I found it in my compost heap and it ran really fast.
Also, I think the little mite on it's side might be my arach for the day. It was in the same container as that karma-slapped Mite from yesterday, so I'm not sure if it got a mite from him or if alll of the bugs in the compost pile have mites on them.
Beautiful masked bee biting what appears to be the stigma of a callistemon flower. I.D. help always much appreciated. [Blue Mountain, NSW]
EDIT: A big thank you to Michael Batley for identifying this bee as Hylaeus (Gnathoprosopis) amiculus
