The End of the Raven

-- by Edgar Allen Poe's Cat

by Eric Portell

On a night quite unenchanting, when the rain was downward slanting,

I awakened to the ranting of the man I catch mice for.

Tipsy and a bit unshaven, in a tone I found quite craven,

Poe was talking to a Raven perched above the chamber door.

"Raven's very tasty," thought I, as I tiptoed o'er the floor,

"There is nothing I like more"

Soft upon the rug I treaded, calm and careful as I headed

Towards his roost atop that dreaded bust of Pallas I deplore.

While the bard and birdie chattered, I made sure that nothing

clattered,

Creaked, or snapped, or fell, or shattered, as I crossed the corridor;

For his house is crammed with trinkets, curios and wierd decor -

Bric-a-brac and junk galore.

Still the Raven never fluttered, standing stock-still as he uttered,

In a voice that shrieked and sputtered, his two cents' worth -

"Nevermore."

While this dirge the birdbrain kept up, oh, so silently I crept up,

Then I crouched and quickly lept up, pouncing on the feathered bore.

Soon he was a heap of plumage, and a little blood and gore -

Only this and not much more.

"Oooo!" my pickled poet cried out, "Pussycat, it's time I dried out!

Never sat I in my hideout talking to a bird before;

How I've wallowed in self-pity, while my gallant, valiant kitty

Put and end to that damned ditty" - then I heard him start to snore.

Back atop the door I clambered, eyed that statue I abhor,

Jumped - and smashed it on the floor.

This gull flew around in circles looking for somewhere hard to drop the shellfish, but having flown over the hard road and footway, then dropped the shell on the soft sand! Twice! What a birdbrain!

Playing with the ornaments rather than putting them away.

This Seagull quietly checks out the beauty of sunbathing brunette near by. Both he and I were captured by her beauty.

Just one of those days.

Tail feathers of a Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus)

This war memorial stands as a tribute to veterans who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars. At it's base are numerous plaques which represent different divisions of those who served in the First and Second World Wars, as well. It is small, but quite impressive, and really makes you think about the cost of both war and freedom. The memorial is right by one of the large causeways in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and is in a lovely park, where people can come and spend a while thinking about those who served in wars and all those who lost their lives to protect what we now take for granted.

I went to the park that day with my friend, Sarah, and her husband, George. George is a Vietnam vet, a top gun pilot who was shot down and nearly killed. He bears the wounds of service to his country. It makes me sick to think that when he returned to the States, he was jeered by people who protested the war, and called him a "baby killer". I can tell you, it was no baby who shot him in the leg or head! George retired as a Commander. You can see his wonderful flying ability in the movie, "Top gun". He was one of the real pilots in the movie, making the actors look good!

Below is the same pic processed as a black and white daguerreotype. The color one was done using iPiccy's Advanced HDR filter. PicMonkey has the daguerreotype filter. I use the one in the frame section. The regular one doesn't give the neat, edge effects. Between iPiccy and PicMonkey, I manage to get most of the edits I want, and even some that are more involved and fun than Picnik was. If you haven't tried them, give them a whirl! It takes a little more time, since you have to save the pics to your computer to work with them, and then repost in each place, but it's worth the effort compared to the birdbrain editing Aviary offers us here on Flickr!

This is one of the shots we took while in Ohio this weekend. Joe actually took this one and he didn't want me to soften or change the look. He wanted it "Raw" as he put it. Anyway, it was the best of the shots we both took so I am posting his shot.

Also, I'll catch up on everyone's photos this week. I promise. Thanks everyone for all your nice words and invites on my photos while I was out of touch this weekend.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Some more info for those who asked "Why are bridges covered?"

Answer from google:

What you're really trying to protect in a covered bridge are the structural members--the trusses. Made of heavy timber, these are the expensive part of the bridge, and if they fall apart due to exposure to the elements, so does the bridge. An unprotected wooden bridge will last maybe ten years. Put a cover over it, however, and it'll last for centuries. Or at least until some birdbrain adolescent decides to burn it down, the fate of quite a few covered bridges in recent years. But I digress.

Covering a wooden bridge is easy. The trusses already form a boxlike framework. Tack on some rafters and shingles and siding, and there you go. OK, it's not brain surgery, but somebody had to think it up, and the somebody usually credited is Timothy Palmer, who built the prototypical American covered bridge in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1804. Over time there have been anywhere from 3,000 to 16,000, depending on who's doing the estimating. Today fewer than 800 remain. Be assured, however, that this dwindling number is the result of progress, heavy trucks, and teenagers, not exposure to the rain.

My birdbrain has completely taken over. Man it feels nice! This suit makes me so happy inside!

The new layout sucks. A lot. but, the show will go on, so I'm not leaving. Here is the next JLI! Oracle: Diana? You there?

Diana: Yea, hey Barbra, what's up?

Barbra: look, is, is Oliver around?

Diana: Ollie? Yea, right here, why?

Oliver: Hey there pretty bird, ready to get shakin'? I got lube, a...

Diana: Ollie, erm, Barbra's on the phone...

Oliver: Oh, eh, hi there Barbra, what's, what's up? Diana and I were just going to work on the old Arrowmobile, right? Get those breaks working again...

Barbra: Yea, sure you were... Look, I hate to spoil you're fun, but you should get dome clothes on and sit down.

Oliver: What happened? Todd having a playdate with Roy again? No, Roy's not that dumb. Oh, I get it! You need some dating advice with Dick! Want some advice on how to play, using your upper body, now, dontcha? Trust me, Diana can give you some great moves!

*SMACK!*

Diana: OLLIE! Be respectful!

Oliver: Hey, just offering up some advice! I mean, have you seen the tow interact? They are like middle school students at a dance, I mean, not like you and I in the bathroom, but, you know, Tommy and your sis.

Diana: Shut up bowstring!

Oliver: After you birdbrain.

Barbra: ROY'S BEEN TAKEN YOU TWO INGRATES!!!!!

Oliver: WHAT! By who!? They're gonna get an arrow in their face for this!

3 hours later, the JLI are convulsing on the location of Roy Harper, aka the Red Arrow.

Oliver: Hey, thanks for helping me out on this one.

Booster Gold: I'm not letting you go through the loss of your adoptive son, Queen. I've got your back.

Oliver: Hey, why are you so, serious? I mean, when you first came about, you were the big movie star, now you're like Batman.

Billy: Talk later guys, it looks like our friend Mr. Vertigo is out.

Beetle: Let's spin his head so fast he'll get vertigo!

Booster: Palmer, You're up!

Atom: On it!

The team goes in and takes down the baddies, with Oliver taking care of a man who looked like a young Slade Wilson. Booster takes care of Digger Harkins, AKA Captain Boomerang. Captain Marvel picks Vertigo up by the legs and spins him around, causing him to hurl. The Atom unties Roy and checks for injuries.

Oliver: Who are you?!

Kidnapper: I am Slade Wilson

Oliver: No you're not! Slade Wilson is Older and the Deathstroke dude.

Boomerang: Hey, I'll let you know about him, just keep me out of jail!

Oliver: I'm giving you one shot. Who the hell are you!

Wilson: Kiss my ass!

Oliver: Then suck my shaft!

Green Arrow fires an arrow right through this Wilson imposter's mouth. Roy walks out, and gives Oliver a fistbump.

Roy: Haha! I get it, the shaft of an Arrow! Thanks, man! I can't believe these guys got me!

Oliver: It's good to have you back, kid. Now, you, Boomerang guy! Start talking!

The top of the can is the top of a Grenade there are two characters on this can "Bird Brain" and A new Drip Character. The Point of this can was Bombing it could be Literal ;-) and to bring something more Israeli to my Street Cans.

This is one of the things that will be in the ReUse Project Exhibition!

Jetty Park

Port Canaveral, Florida

This crazy fellow keeps trying to get into this window. I don't know what he sees in there. We've got a bluebird who occasionally tries to get in one of our back windows. I guess we attract the real birdbrains!

for the window or door theme at 52.5 of 2010... for the window part of the theme, obviously.

Explored!!!

if you ever have bird hit a window, pick it up and hold it in your hands to warm it for 15 minutes or so. it will often come out of shock and survive! This one flew away after about 45 minutes.

Lorikeet, landed on my head and pecked..after hearing the hollow sound,he flew away

In his mind it was the easiest solution to his dilemma. He needed to drop an acquaintance off to shop and he inconveniently found himself on the Trans-Canada Highway – likely the busiest highway in Canada – and there were few parking spots. Imagine that.

Lucky for this unfortunate soul, he located a completely empty red curb zone – and it was right in front of the Chapter’s book store they were heading for. His possible fear that his Hyundai Tiburon’s BC licence plate number, eight-13 TGM, was bad luck, would’ve helped him view this ample free parking as good fortune.

The driver seized the opportunity and pulled forward to the end of the red curb zone, to avoid being an inconvenience to others. He didn’t want to be an asshole.

What this mental midget had failed to cipher was that this red zone was marking one of the busiest bus stops that our beleaguered and striking transit system utilizes in Victoria, British Columbia’s downtown core. He had stumbled into a rare calm moment of what normally is a camera blur of activity.

What this Red Curb Jack-Off failed to consider was the next bus in a line of buses would need to stop too far back to allow the trailing convoy to pass entirely through the previous lighted intersection and stop in the bus stop. They failed to anticipate that some bus horn ignoring self-centered little bird-brain was actually going to obstruct their work area.

The tally now is: one obstructed bus stop, with buses and passengers still waiting to unload; and one entirely obstructed intersection – while the car passenger appeared to be organizing her purse, or maybe checking her lipstick in the mirror before exiting the vehicle. It was difficult to see what was happening through the reflected windshield and glare of the busy city center’s night lights.

When the princess finally departed her Hyundai carriage the city-jamming self-centered driver, seemingly wishing to appear seeking a prompt solution to this debacle he’d manifested, quickly accelerated forward and away from the red curb, in spite of the red light and pedestrians in his line of travel; into the bike-lane and crosswalk.

A well-lit and reflected approaching cyclist was forced out of the bike lane and into traffic in the centre motor-vehicle lane.

The tally now is: several still-obstructed buses with passengers waiting to unload due to a partially obstructed busy bus stop and a completely blocked lighted intersection on the Trans-Canada Highway; a thankful-to-be-alive cyclist forced out of the now completely obstructed bike-lane into night traffic; and a now partially obstructed crosswalk.

Not to worry; our little genius was still working his grey matter, devising a solution to the escalating consequences of his internal brain trust’s consensus. Preparing for a premature intersection entry with full pedal-to-the-metal application, he sat in anticipation of the light turning green like a cougar waiting to pounce; well, like an inconsiderate self-centered cougar driving a death machine, maybe.

The Red Curb Jack-Off sped into the intersection on the red light. He finally split from the bus stop, swung left, changed lanes in the intersection, crossed through the bike-lane, and entered the cyclist occupied center lane. The traffic light eventually turned green, but not before he startled lagging elderly pedestrians in the crosswalk on the other side of the intersection – buzzed them then gone before their long lives flashed before their eyes.

No need to tally up again, seriously, the Red Curb Jack-Off just added freaking out several of Victoria’s nearly-deads to his list. Sure, we’ve got lots of ‘em to spare, but...

from speech impediment.

This is why they're called birdbrains. This wading bird seems to be pretty close to the alligator, especially since its back is turned. And it looks like the 'gator's got its eyes right on the bird.

Seen in Myakka River State Park, Florida. No birds were injured during the making of this photograph.

Friends call me C, very few call me CBB (cocky birdbrain).

Babysit: I was told, as a father, you should do your watch !

Now: Locked up behind the chicken-wire inside the incubator at the Hen-house. Very hot & tricky, belive me !

What to do ??: No Hens, chickens only; maybe I shall make a crow "COCK-a-doodle-doo"

Pages from the programme for the Ingrow St. John's Church annual pantomime 'Dick Whittington' staged in January 1956. Includes adverts for T. L. Buckler (grocer) of Queen's Road, Arthur Day (Ingrow Bridge Pharmacy) and York County Savings Bank on North Street.

The sixth, and as it turned out final, pantomime to be produced by Keith Marsden and Geoffrey Rundle at St. John’s Parish Church was announced in the December 1955 edition of Ingrow Parish Church Messenger. It was to be ‘Dick Whittington’. This time it was to be performed for eight nights on Friday 20th January and Saturday 21st January 1956 then on the following Monday to Saturday nights. Once again it was staged under the patronage of the Mayor and Mayoress of Keighley – now Alderman Percy Taylor and his wife.

The action took place in various locations around London, as well as aboard the Good Ship “Heaving Stomach” and the exotic climes of Morocco. Geoffrey played Clarissa Crumpet and Keith played Idle Jack. Derek Lund played King Rat and Stanley Peckover played Alderman Fitzwarren, while Joan Scott played his daughter Alice. Marilyn Marsden was Fairy Moonbeam, Anne Burgess played the Summer Queen, Linda Shuttleworth played Tommy the cat, Alan Park was Captain Fungus-Face, Ernest Marsden was the Emperor of Morocco and Terry Marsden had the dual roles of Mr Birdbrain and the Grand Vizier. Jean Wallis was promoted to principal boy as Dick Whittington, following her appearance in ‘Seating Fun’.

The scenic artist was John Williams of Hertfordshire, who paid a visit to Kensington Museum in order to research the actual appearance of London’s Cheapside area in the 14th century. Once again costumes were hired from W. A. Homburg Ltd. of Leeds. To match the increased ambition for this production, the programme was expanded from four pages to eight! Tickets went on sale from 19th December 1955 and once again they cost two shillings and six pence for adults and one shilling and six pence for children. All seats for each of the eight performances were booked in advance.

The last performance was on Saturday 28th January 1956. This time there was no incumbent Vicar of Ingrow to give thanks to the cast and crew as the Reverend Miller had moved on from St. John’s in November 1955. His replacement, the Reverend George Speller wasn’t appointed until April 1956. When Reverend Speller arrived, his perception of the pantomimes was very different to that of his predecessor.

The item was loaned to the St. John's Church History and Heritage Group and the Keighley and District Local History Society by Patsy Marsden (wife of Keith Marsden) in November 2021.

I attended a seminar for a few days up in Hell's Kitchen at a Holiday Inn. On the corner of 57th and 9th Avenue was a lot of space where billboards have been posted, and so I took a few shots.

Notice the bird flying out of his brain.

Seen in the Wildlife Center, Sydney, Australia.

Thanks to Georgie Sharp, who has identified the bird as a "Tawny Frogmouth".

With their nocturnal habit and owl-like appearance, Tawny Frogmouths are often confused with owls, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Their feet are weak however, and lack the curved talons of owls.

Identification

The general plumage of the Tawny Frogmouth is silver-grey, slightly paler below, streaked and mottled with black and rufous. A second plumage phase also occurs, with birds being russet-red. The eye is yellow in both forms, and the wide, heavy bill is olive-grey to blackish. South-eastern birds are larger than birds from the north. Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal birds (night birds). During the day, they perch on tree branches, often low down, camouflaged as part of the tree.

Size range

34 cm to 53 cm

Similar Species

Papuan Frogmouth, Marbled Frogmouth

Distribution

The Tawny Frogmouth is found throughout Australia, including Tasmania.
